I asked this a while back but never got an answer on "what to install where"
Need that help please.
 
Asus Laptop- Hi end - very fast i7 new gen (not haswell)\16gb ram, etc
OS drive is Intel SSD. Platinum is installed on it. I removed the optical drive and put in a 750GB SATA-very fast also.
 
I do "not" really record on the laptop, mainly for playback of projects.
So should I just put the samples and Audio files both on the 750GB. or use an external drive for samples or audio

I would put both on the internal drive but I do not use streaming samples which that simplifies the decision.

Do I have a choice-(streaming or not) I know Kontakt 5 will let me change this but not sure about all the others.
Laptop has 16GB ram
 
I'll put the samples on the drive also and see how it goes.

Depends on the synth. No Cakewalk synths stream, all samples are read into memory when the programs are loaded.

I didn't know that. Kontakt 5 gives you a choice-right now it's memory. Need to check the rest.
 
Steven Slated Drums Plat, Ozone stuff and Toontrack stuff are the only ones that really matter.

By default Superior Drummer2 loads all samples at once into memory. EZD1 loads into memory. Iris1 & 2 load into memory.

 
Great! Everything loads to memory that I have(well the prefs as they are) So I should be good.

So you as a rule of thumb, where audio is streamed from disc, you'd want on an SSD? So recorded order tracks would do this? But sample players depend. At the moment I only intend on using XLN AD2 and ADKeys as my only samplers, and they both DO NOT Stream from Disc. so may as well stay in a normal larger drive.

So swapping my DVD drive out for SSD, I would just mean pointing Sonar here for saving projects, but leaving everything else as the Command Centre likes to install.

This depends on what you mostly do.  I find an SSD heavenly when loading large samples.  But this is only done once so it saves waiting on load, but then nothing after.  However, since I'm mostly puttering around learning, I often switch patches to try them out and having the samples on SSD makes the switching fast (on my laptop with only HDD, this is painful).  If I were just mixing set intruments, I'd only have to wait once at startup and the samples could just as well be on a HDD.
