Thanks so much for your replies. I would like to reply directly but, silly me, I couldn't figure that out either so hopefully this will be seen. I have tried to answer Noynekker's questions as best I can after several hours of googling.
sound card: AMD HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DEVICE - REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO
ASIO drivers?: I don't think so. I came across some information in cyberspace that said they need to be installed after purchase. I tried googling this question: "How do I determine if my computer has ASIO drivers?" and came up short. Maybe you can do better.
OS: Windows 8.1
Does your audio interface not show up in Sonar preferences in Audio - Devices at all?: EDIT>PREFERENCES UNDER INPUT DRIVERS, THERE ARE 2 COLUMNS, FRIENDLY NAME, AND DRIVER NAME. IT IS BLANK UNDER BOTH. UNDER OUTPUT DRIVERS - FRIENDLY NAME, IT SAYS: SPEAKERS (WITH A CHECKED CHECK BOX) (REALTEC HIGH DEFINITI AND DRIVER NAME, SPEAKERS (REALTEK HIGH DIFINITI
I know what none of this means. I have one pressing immediate task at hand which is to convert my midi files to mp3 audio. On my old version of Sonar Home Studio 7, I was able to do this by adding an audio track, arming it so the red dot goes on, and pressing R on the keyboard. This would record a WAV file which I could then convert to mp3. The old computer had Vista. When I tried to do this on the new computer, with Home Studio 7, the midi tracks would play back fine, but there was no input choices on the audio track to record. I upgraded to Artist, hoping to resolve this but Artist does not even play back. The vertical transport line moves but there is no sound.
Both output and input fields on the audio track are blank.
Just so you know, I do not use or need any outboard midi interface.
thanks again,
Luke
