I have a couple of usb midi-interfaces that works perfectly in both X3 (and my old 8.5) from m-audio, ESI and E-mu. I also have a serial port unit called MidiLink which can't be used from Sonar at all (it's not visible). The strange thing is that other programs can see it and use it just fine, it's just Sonar where it is never shown in the list of available interfaces. 
 
I have tried the following:
 
Midi-ox (works ok)
Waldorf Spectre (show up, no problem)
Cubase le (no problem)
X3 (not visible)
8.5 (not visible)
 
So it is there alright. I have tried to start X3/8.5 with ctrl pressed and the config was the re-created. Same issue.
 
Any hidden settings i can try. key-combinations? master ini-file flags?

Have you looked in edit-preferences-midi -devices to see if it is there and checkmarked to be available to Sonar?

You might also want to check your Sonar Driver Mode in Preferences.  If, for instance, you have ASIO specified and your drivers don't support it, you won't see your interface listed.

I have looked in the midi-devices preferences dialog. The driver is not listed there. I have also removed the TTSEQ.ini file (%appdata%/cakewalk) and restarted Sonar to re-populate that list but it still won't show.
 
I also tried to switch from Asio to WDM (altough i didn't think it would matter since the midilink is a pure midi-interface) but its not there. I tried several programs (midi-ox, midi-device information and Sonar) and the output from these are shown below:

Very confusing. Why does only Sonar refurse to show it?

Only thing I can think of is that maybe Sonar doesn't check for devices on a serial port, just guessing. Maybe someone else with more knowledge will chime in.

That sounds odd really. I used to run the version 6 (LE), 8.5 (LE), 8.5 under Windows XP and it worked fine there. Now, using Win7x64, it is not seen (by Cakewalk) anymore. Since Windows sees it, then something must be "wrong" with Sonar in conjunction with win7.
 
(if anyone wonders why on earth i'm trying to use an old serial midi device, the reason is that many (most?) usb-midi devices does not send out the 5volts that they should according to the midi specification, but rather 3.5-3.7 volts. In my case, i bought the "Dsp-Gplug Analog Modeling MIDI Synth" (can't add the link since i'm apparently have to few posts here right now) and i don't want to use the midi-out of my jx8p to drive it.) 

I had the very same problem with the yamaha cbx interface cable connecting my yamaha keyboard when I changed from 8.5PE on XP to X3Pro Win 7 (same PC, so no hardware changes) Worked perfectly on all versions up until that point, but I could never get X3 to "see"  that it was connected and had to use an alternative connection. Sorry that doesn't help you solve your problem, but sometimes it's nice to be not the only one, lol !

Stupid question, but in the top screen shots, what happens if you scroll down to the bottom of the list?
 
Any chance it's a 32 vs. 64 bit issue?
 
Also, it's a long shot but could this be the problem? Might be worth doing anyway if you've used lots of MIDI ports over the years. Note that you have to follow the specific instructions about running the batch file, just enabling "show hidden devices" isn't enough.
 
Finally, serial port interfaces are really old technology at this point. Maybe SONAR doesn't look for anything there.
 
In terms of the initial problem of not getting enough voltage, are you running your USB interfaces via a hub? If so, plugging directly into the motherboard might solve your problem.

Or having a hub powered by a wall wart.

Paulo, yes i seem to have that exact problem unfortunately. Perhaps i wish for too much here and need to let go of my dear old midilink :-( It DOES help to know that i'm not the only one left in the world trying to keep the antique interfaces running

i have almost worn out the mouse scrollwheel, hoping to find the midilink (). No luck there.
 
I jumped right into creating the bat-file and ran it (holding all thumbs crossed while doing so) but unfortunately my other interfaces shows without duplicates and this serial one does not show up. I guess its time to let to of this device () and move on to newer technology. I heard a lot about this new thing called "usb" (lol) - but will need to check what voltage it sends out before buying a new one) ;-)

I have tried that one as well without luck :-( I guess the midi-pins does not send out the +5v that is fed into the interface. Great suggestion still :-)
