Greg Lester
A couple of days ago, I posted a thread complaining about some crashes and dumps I've had.

I thought I was clear in something I said very specific - "I sent the crash reports along with error codes as I was prompted to do when the crashes happened." When I made that post, I couldn't give you specifics because I thought Cakewalk would be addressing it and I didn't note anything. Hence why I asked if I had to keep a note book. I made an observation concerning the updates. The way I understood one of the videos that Cakewalk released was in those updates we would get new features. Instead, it seems like the software is still in development and the  updates make it a work in progress. Yesterday I had another crash. It was pretty simple. I closed a project, it asked me if I wanted to save it, I clicked yes and the error pops up and the prompt asks me if I want to report it, and I did. That was a new one. Last night, I was remixing an old song. I removed everything off of all channels and buses and started over. As I started adding plugins, I start losing sound of different tracks and going out of time. This only happens as I'm adding instruments or plugins no report was created for this. I know bugs are in every software product there is. But, just to be flamed about it because "you" didn't have any problems or you think because the software is stable for you, then there is no possibility I could have any problems. My post was more out of frustration and observation than anything, and posting without consideration of the fallout deserves my apology.

However, what my post didn't deserve was the trolling and the flaming that it got. If people can't interact or relate to others in a respectful way without the trolling (I could think of a lot more descriptions), then it tells me about some of the people that are on here.  So why would I interact with that? That is why I didn't communicate on it any longer. And knowing how people are from another profession I had years ago, some of you will only read what you want to get out of it and do some more trolling.

I was frustrated because at the time I had my save feature turned off and I kept losing stuff and then redoing it.  I don't expect anyone to be aware of it because you don't know me, but this is only a hobby for me. I'm just a middle aged fat man who likes to make music, if I feel like I have wasted money, I get cranky and whine. I have had know training and this all started two years ago when I got a  SONAR 8.5 LE disk that came with Roland's BR800 digital recording. It's addictive hobby.

My apology is for the negativity and non clarity that was created. However not for the criticism on it's face. There are two other DAWs I've used and never experienced any issues like I have with SONAR (observation).

I would like say that I received a message from an individual that was really respectful by just communicating with me instead of the other stuff and I appreciate that.

I use an HP with Windows 8.1, 8gb memory, 1tb  hard drive, 2tb Toshiba external hard drive, i5 intel core. I will be adding another 8gb in memory. My audio interface is a Presonus AudioBox 44VSL, and I use an ART tube mic pre. I run my Line 6 POD HD600 through the mic pre.  I also use WAVES gold bundle and sometimes Native products.

Thanks.

Understood, and thank you for the clarification.

Please understand that there ARE genuine trolls who come here with an agenda, make one post about how much SONAR sucks and how great some other DAW is, give no specifics, and are never seen again. So when a post comes with "the look and feel" of this kind of post, I see red flags and so does at least some of the community. However, it's clear I need to be less frustrated by these people as it can cause me to jump to conclusions that may or may not be warranted, which happened in this case. So I apologize for that.

So, let's fix your problems and get your system running smoothly. First question: laptop or desktop? Laptops often default to power-saving features that need to be disabled. The "adding plug-ins/losing sound/going out of time" is something that has been mentioned several times and there are fixes for that, but we need to know which plug-ins push the system over the edge...for example if they're ones with lookahead, like Waves limiters or the TS-64. Also we need to know how familiar you are with the PDC function...etc. etc.

The community is very helpful when dealing with specifics, but please understand that a history of previous "rant" posts from people who may not even own SONAR kind of taint rant posts in general. But I think we all understand that working with computer-based audio systems can be frustrating because we've all experienced frustrations. I too have often blamed SONAR for something that ended up having nothing to do with SONAR.

So, let's try to collect some more data, analyze your issues, and see what's going on.

You dont have to apologize for anything.  This forum is heavy with "Sonar Defenders", some of them have even been empowered by Cakewalk with mod-like priviledges.  Because mod priviledge has been handed out like candy, this forum is VERY "top heavy".  Youve got a *large* inner circle of "thought police" and a large number of independent thinkers who are trying to cope with the idiosyncrasies of the software, and who (rightly) feel that by bringing visibility to problems it may provide faster solutions (bug fixes, etc).

I have seen mobbing many times on the internet and several times here (have once been the target myself), but have never participated in mobbing on anyone.  I cant imagine how low the self-esteem of these people must be that they would gain anything from anonymously piling on someone who is frustrated and having a problem.   In their minds they are "doing Cakewalk a solid by protecting the reputation of the software, the developers, thier livlihood, etc"  But they are also suppressing dialog and the valid concerns of people who paid good money.

It was a shock to me how intolerant this forum is.  I think the software is great, but the software would be better if they dropped a bomb on the forum. I really think the forum has a very unprofessional feel.  If someone spends $500 on software they should not be a second class citizen in the support forum.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the update.

Yea, with every new release these  forums get a lot of trolls or agent provocateurs.  It gets tiresome.  Craig kept calling out one such who kept changing his registration but not his IP, apparently.  Craig is usually more patient than most others,  being an employee of Gibson.

No need to apologize now that you've explained.  We all get a little PO'ed when our latest toy won't work.  Gawd knows I've had a few rants.  Just remember this is a user based forum, not official help.  But we have all kinds here - mostly musicians who are into home recording but plenty of "pros" and computer ... geeks ... even those who design and make music computer systems.  So there is plenty of brain fire-power available.  You'll find it a great resource, as long as we didn't chase you off.  But really, we may  bark but there is no bite.  It is the internet after all.

Hay all.
You have to trust, not assume..be honest on both sides..problems, create questions, question asked, answer to your best abilities...

This process should gain results by the interactions, when followed in respect of the issues, and the users ability, or problem solvers means to convey.

Now as ranting goes...I can do that very well, and have..to express my needs, goals, and desires of DAW Audio...Still ain't perfect for all...
And i believe it is dependent on (device choices/audio devices with mouse keyboard,internet..ect/build quality of computer/ drivers/os/software) and to get all that balanced..is hard to do, if when done...updates ruin it all..so it has to constantly fixed or rebalenced....and or if what seemed to work before said update, no longer does, even after removal of updates...then something has gotten over written...to cause this error.

Just my two cents.

I hope all that come seeking answers here get them...and we all try to help regardless of trolls or such.

why fight them?

give the best you got, if they do not offer up answers to questions ...then say, i am sorry (dave) i cannot do this (that)...with out more input...and move along.

now some people have no clue about computers....so when one askes did you do this tweak, or set this in x...but do not tell how to...Yes I can see frustrations arise.

Mead and a nice cuppa something..or smoke em if you got em...keep notes on all settings made (that balance)(or make most systems base core work)...then the software pro's can settle the rest.

So system, os, drvers, tweaks if needs be,then software addressed...makes it work sort of or as best could be on said system (test as is with all auto updates turned off)...and then the update manually if you feel like...before any updates ( if made stable) back up the system/ make iso ect.best to disconnect the audio machine from internet, and turn off all redundant devices.

get a second computer for internet, and tie that into the studio..or what ever..that way nothing should change the setup with out you in control.

I think this process does work...but virus, and the update process does cause issues...eventaually with corruption of the registry, and over wrtting driver use , authority, and restrictions, ins outs, and on off rules get muddy.

Just my two and 3/4 cents now....and another cuppa!

be good to all...nothing wrong with dat...and no one can make complaints for!

have a great day All....God Loves you, be good.

Ultimately this was my concern when the first thread was posted, as the reception to a new forum user (regardless if how) requires a bit of decorum, especially from anyone carrying a "title." Please bear in mind that these forums are public record and many read posts without ever typing one.

A nice adage from my days if old is "One f* up us worth 100 attaboys." This community is a great group of people, but bad press affects reputation collectively.

Just food for thought anyway...

The very first response to that thread was what I expected to see... After that it degraded quickly and turned into embarassment (for me anyway).

To the forum members - after the initial response to his initial post, and the OP not returning, I did some digging and located a Face Book page for him, and he and I exchanged several good messages, where I explained why several folks had judged his post to be likely trolling (though several also had expressed not being sure), and my intent was to communicate that if he was willing to engage the Sonar forum again with separate threads for each of whatever issues he was having, that there REALLY are a whole bunch of folks in the forum community that will help him, and I see here that he has indeed come back to get some assistance.

Also, Andrew Rossa was the one that had removed all of those other posts from his original post, because of all the folks hammering him because of the initial rant.  He indicated that to me in a PM yesterday, which I also passed on to the OP, so he knew the real reasons behind those posts having been removed.

I think all should be in good shape now, moving in a MUCH better direction so let's get him squared away.

Oh, and lastly - I DID go back in and review each and every post that was made by folks in response to the original thread - with the initial rant, and I just wanted to comment that despite the comments in this thread about the forum hosts and thought police and all of that, not a single post by any of the forum hosts blasted the original poster - each post had been along the lines that while someone coming in and ranting without detail or seemingly not seeking any assistance was 'silly' (quoting there on the silly), they all went on to also indicate that it was entirely possible that the OP WAS a legitimate poster with real issues - and had just not actually gotten into any of the details in that initial rant.

As it turned out, that WAS the case, and after some discussion with the original poster through my private FB messages, explaining the whole reaction by a bunch of forum members to his initial rant, and asking him to give it another shot - indeed we are here, and moving on to try to assist him with fixing his issues.

Thanks to ALL for being willing to work through the issues for this forum member, and thanks to the OP for returning to give us the opportunity to try to DO the problem resolution with you.

Was that other thread removed entirely? It will not come up on my phone at all now.

I have to disagree with you on that, Bob.  I was once more disappointed to see a newcomer treated to the usual ridicule and psychological analysis of his/her character by several, including forum hosts and above.  Then more discussion about how it's certain the person was a troll because they haven't reappeared within a very few hours.

I wish we could just presume that a newcomer is a normal person, no matter what they say (unless, of course, they're pushing kitchen cabinets).

I find it a little strange that the thread has been completely wiped.
