  • Please Help! SONAR X1 Producer Freezes on Boot-Up

Aloha! I'm running Windows XP on a Dell with 2.40 Ghz processor and 3 GB RAM. As of today, when trying to load SONAR X1 Producer, it will not progress past the initial "SONAR" load screen. Less than 24 hours ago it was running optimally whenever I opened it--so far as I know there have been no updates or system changes in the meantime. While viewing the load progress in the Task Manager, it never progresses far beyond 30MB before just ceasing altogether. Any ideas on how I could beat this or what's gone wrong? Thanks in advance, drughelmet

When you say you get to the "initial load screen", do you mean the splash screen, or do you get into Sonar at all?

The splash screen--I do not actually get into the program itself. Since last post I have updated to Producer X1C, and it has not made any noticeable difference.

then . . . update all audio/ midi drivers, defrag disk drive, registry clean, empty cakewalk "picture cache"
are suggestions I have seen from others on this forum. So . . . you're not getting a crash on open error, it just hangs endlessly, until you have to end the task, or do you have to re-boot windows ?
- I run X1 Expanded on a Win XP system, and must say it does run smoothly, except for the obvious RAM limitations.

I'll give that a try, thanks. And yes, it just hangs endlessly until I end the task. I've been running X1 Producer on this machine for over a year with no issues (other than the occasional hangup--but not like this) until today.

You can try opening Sonar in safe mode. Hold down the shift key when you launch Sonar, then if you get in you can try re-saving your normal.cwt file (maybe backup the original first).

Ok, I've updated drivers, defragged, cleaned the registry, and emptied the picture cache. No change. I also realized that I had Producer 8.5 still installed, but that has the same issue, so I deleted it. Has anyone else encountered this issue, or am I alone? I certainly can't find any documentation about this type of situation...

Have you tried the safe mode suggestion? If as I suspect it's a plugin causing the issue safe mode will not load them.

Since you are seeing the problem in two different flavors of SONAR, I suspect that the hang is occurring while SONAR is searching for and loading your plugins.  I've seen this behavior after loading new plugins and was able to solve it by uninstalling the plug.  If you were reporting a recent addition of a plugin, I'd be more sure of this.  If you can get SONAR up in safemode, you can tick off a preference to not have plugin searched for each time the program starts.

Shift-clicking a program in Windows XP doesn't open it in safe mode--I think that's a Mac thang. However, booting into safe mode and trying to open Sonar that way does not yield any results either. And I have not installed any new plug-ins since updating to X1 over a year ago... Thanks for all the suggestions, has anyone actually encountered this specific issue before?
