  • Can anyone quantify what "Gloss" does?

... on PC.  Is it a simple lift around 4-5KHz?

See http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2188887, I have also seen it described as "a 3dB high frequency shelf boost. Starting around 4k."

The funny thing is I don't really hear what gloss is doing. It's not that I can't hear high frequencies, because if I give things as little as a 1dB boost with a high shelf at 12kHz, I can hear that clearly. I can sometimes hear something going on with gloss but not to the point where I'm actively enabling it in the mix because I think it improves things. Maybe I should try enabling it on the master bus, see if it's more apparent there.

Gloss is very subtle.  I cannot always hear the effect, so I don't use it.  I like to know what I'm doing to the EQ.

It is very subtle but it adds a bit of brightness.

Thanks for the replies. The EQ lift seems to fit, but I tend to think there is something more than EQ going on, especially when modelling notable consoles of the industry. I'm wondering if there's a side-chaining of those Gloss frequencies and compressing that band.

I can't quantify it but I use it on my Hi Hat and OH Cymbal tracks religiously.  Does what the name implies, adds a subtle sheen to the high frequencies.

I always figured it was some kind of special curve/peak/resonance and/or exciter type dealie. Sure doesn't sound like a plain old hi shelf to me.

And yeah, I definitely notice it on some things. To the point it's almost undesirable or even annoying if applied to something that does not want to be "glossed". Most times it's rather nice and I'm glad it's there.

Beepster, Have you ever used the FX chain called HatHelper that is in the plug-in list? That is pretty handy for hats and cymbals.
