Greetings all, I have a Rain ION PC, I upgraded the motherboard a few years ago as well as the processor. It now seems to be killing hard drives as of late. I have offline backup but 3 hard drives have died in the past month and a half(all western digital; all seagates are fine). I have a hotswap bay in the front and as of yesterday it stopped reading another drive (it's not dead but I got the message today that it needs to be formatted to use) I have no virus or malware in the pc. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm on windows 8 and have no desire to upgrade as I don't want the headache getting the VS-700 to work. If you were to rebuild a pc what components would you use?

So far I've decided on a SeaSonic X power supply. My processor that I have in the machine rt now is 4ghz AMD 3 socket. I'll most likely just keep going with it.

First thing you might to check before swapping out motherboards, is that the SATA port you are using is still set to the hot-swap mode. It sounds like you could be getting write errors, due to the drives not being properly ejected. I had a power spike reset my BIOS once. It reset all my SATA ports to default settings.
 
Seasonic make great power supplies. I also like EVGA power supplies. Both brands have been reliable for me. Gigabyte motherboards have been good to me. A lot of people swear by Asus motherboards as well, but I had problems with several of their budget boards.

Generally, you get what you pay for, but that doesn't mean you have to spend a ton of money. I've found that simply buying  a product that is well reviewed by people who have purchased it is the best way to go. Newegg.com is a great place to see customer reviews. It seems that AM3+ motherboards are a bit expensive these days.. I did see one or two under $100, but I'm not sure I would trust them.

I've been looking at newegg actually I found a gigabit and an asus SM3+ for about $250 and some $80. The reviews are good on the ones for $250.
