Well that really doesn't make a whole lot of sense Willy why have a boxed version if there is nothing in it???

So that you can purchase from your local music shop if you so preferred. It does have some additional stuff aside from the redemption code, printed versions of the getting started and quick start guides.

Well to throw my hat in here.....I actually want the "Boxed Version" and not the download.....

A download for me takes like all day !!! (I have slow internet) so the disks were always welcome in my house and I never minded that they were a little behind because I could always catch up with an update.

I did not see it as a problem....now that Willey explained it from a business point of view I can understand their position.....But I have to say that I like the idea of making DVD's on demand...after all there are a LOT of ONLINE SHOPS that operate that way so why not Sonar???

If you make DVD's on demand count me in as one of the takers.....!!!!

Pretty sure this is new and a significant change in packaging which is not apparent to the consumer.  It does make sense to have boxed versions for brick and mortar retail outlets however; vendors selling on the web should be asked to have a clear statement on the product page of what comes in the boxed version.

Agree with Steve on this.

I agree.
I think that Cakewalk should make it 'abundantly' clear to all potential buyers that boxed versions do not contain media! Everyone knows that when a person buys a boxed version, the usual expectation and understanding is that they will be receiving physical media, which is also the primary reason why we would buy the boxed version. Not only are downloads a big problem for some peoples' situation, but it can make things more expensive for some of us because of internet download data costs; what's more, the type of internet i have will not allow more than 500mbs of data downloads in one day, which pretty much makes it 'impossible' for me to download Sonar at all. If i bought a boxed version of Sonar from a retailer, and found know physical media inside, i would go off my head and punch holes in the wall. This is a serious issue Cakewalk! Please make sure people here are well-informed one way or another that boxed versions do not include physical media, so that on one else stumbles across this very unpleasant surprise. Secondly, Laptops without a CDRW drive are still very much in the minority, and i for one still burn CDs of my music as my primary archival method. Now that i've said that, i applaud Cakewalk for this...

"We understand and hear you loud and clear. We are working on making DVD's available through our online store. They will be made 'on-demand' with the latest ISO, and we are working on a plan to make sure that the DVD is always within 2 months of the latest SONAR builds."

I say Phew! The only thing i don't understand is why on-demand DVD's could still be behind the latest ISO by 2 months, doesn't make sense. One question Cakewalk, are the DVD's available for order as of now, or is this service coming soon. Is the option there now in the Cakewalk Store to include DVD's, even if they will take a while to get here?

Hmmm... This is sort of funny, since I had a friend buy me Platinum as a gift, so I requested they get the boxed version from SW, then I could decide when to redeem it and have the media. To add to the comedy, SW called me to tell me that it was a pre-order and would not ship till stocked (sort of spoiling any "surprise" from a gift)...

Now that I see this thread, I am thinking "Why does SW need to wait for stock to come in???? They could print the redemption code and mail it it a letter!!!!"

They are LITERALLY going to FedEx an empty box???? Whose "brain child" was this?

BTW, SW never mentioned there was no media, and I specifically said I preferred media for this version... Implying that SW did/does not know either (or he could have corrected me).

Thank goodness that $22.50 shipping cost was "free," but also coincides with JRR's group buy discount. Things that make you go "Hmmm..."

The fault lies partially with Sweetwater. It makes little sense for them to sell the boxed version through their website. Cakewalk has to have a boxed version for retail outlets to put on the shelves. Sweetwater should pull the boxed version from their website or at least make clear what the box contains.

Hi All,

The boxed version does not include DVD's. It has a Redemption Code that activates your 12 month membership.

Why No DVD's?
1) The pace at which we are delivering updates means that by the time a DVD gets to a shelf it will already be obsolete.
2) It's a huge resource and time sink to be managing shipping DVD's to dealers, swapping out stock when they have old versions and honestly its a bad customer experience to buy a 'new thing' and have it actually include something that is 6 months old.
3) The number of users that actually purchased DVD's the last few years is really, really low to the point where printing a large pile up front doesn't make much sense.
4) Less and less computers are shipping with DVD drives, especially laptops.

My Internet is miserable and DVD's would make my life not miserable
We understand and hear you loud and clear. We are working on making DVD's available through our online store. They will be made 'on-demand' with the latest ISO and we are working on a plan to make sure that the DVD is always within 2 months of the latest SONAR builds.

Hi there Willy,

Could you please clarify this, because at the top, you said, "The boxed version does not include DVDs. It has a redemption code that activates your 12 month membership."

but at the end of your post, you said, "
My Internet is miserable and DVD's would make my life not miserable
We understand and hear you loud and clear. We are working on making DVD's available through our online store. They will be made 'on-demand' with the latest ISO and we are working on a plan to make sure that the DVD is always within 2 months of the latest SONAR builds."
This indicates there will be physical dvds then....

Thanks...

They ought to burn the DVDs for people to have and charge extra for the Boxed version.  I'm fine w/ download and have a bunch of old boxes (and DVDs!) laying around.  But I understand if you have slow internet etc.

You would still need to download the latest updates, but those are usually smaller files.  DimPro and the loops are the real problem bandwidth wise.  There should always be a separate installation for the synths and media so the SONAR update is small and you don't run into activation problems.  I've got 4-5 DimPros listed in my old account.
