Gonna be -13 tonight! Who thought this is a good idea?

And more snow coming this weekend.

What is weird is how the birds are already singing their songs of love.
And already we are spotting ones that have been coming back earlier each year even though it has been colder and snowier for the past 5 years here.

Good thing I live in the city with corner stores just a few minutes walk. At least one has a good wine selection. Gonna havta try sumpin new to celebrate having a working furnace.

The salt they put on roads is not table salt which is what's in the ocean. It's, at least partly, potassium chloride which is what was used in lethal injections to stop the heart. Good stuff, huh? In Minnesota we have very little snow but the roads are white with salt. And -15 last night. High of 1 yesterday.

It is supposed to be 70 tomorrow in Dallas.  By Monday freezing rain.  We get all the weather - just usually not in one week.  But a little snow or ice shut downs the city - trust me, you don't want to be driving around w/ others that don't realize snow means don't slam on your brakes.

Lutefisk - is that what they put on the roads up thar?

That may depend on where you're at.  My sister-in-law works for a bulk goods transporter/distributor and the salt they get by the boatload  (from some mine in Ontario, I believe) is both sent around for the roads and to places like Sifto which sell both bagged/road salt (her company may even bag it for them) and table salt.  All from the same salt.

Salt doesn't melt the ice below a certain temperature so they use sand and gravel around here when it's really cold, like it has been for weeks now.  I could use some Spring !

Sodium chloride salt is relatively ineffective below about 15-20.  A lot of municipalities use potassium chloride or magnesium chloride which are effective at temperatures below 0 F.  However, these chemicals have some toxicity to the environment and humans if levels are high enough.  In any case, its less about the ice melting chemicals ending up in the ocean, and more about oils and debris that get caught up in the snow that would end up in the ocean that is also a concern.  These items get left behind with normal snow melt.
