  • Draw Pattern in Take Lanes (other than the 1st)?

Hi-

Is Draw Pattern supposed to work in Take Lanes other than the 1st? It looks like it's doing something (shadow appears across the Lane while painting), but when I release the mouse there are no notes.  Works fine in the MIDI parent track.

Thanks-

I've just tried it. I can draw in the first take lane but only that one. Adding lanes makes no difference it always draws in the first created lane, not sure if that's by design or a bug though.

Hi Karl-

Thanks for checking. I thought I might be able to use Take Lanes for things like keyswitches or Strum Acoustic/RealGuitar strums, etc. in MIDI tracks, but I think that might be a dead end. At this point they really do seem more designed for audio, esp. comping (hence the name, I suppose.)  I was basically gone for the whole layers v. lanes debate.

I guess I can't report it as a bug, but I can't think of a reason for it to be by design, either. Maybe I'll make a feature request.  I already submitted one about being able to Hide Muted Take Lanes in the PRV (http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3175983). I think Take Lanes could be made much more MIDI-friendly with just a few changes.

Thanks again-

Edit: BTW, thanks for clarifying that it does work in the 1st Take Lane. I've changed the subject to reflect that.

Hi-

Does anyone else use Take Lanes for MIDI tracks for things like keyswitches, etc.?

Does anyone know why it might be by design that Draw Pattern only works in the first Take Lane?

Thanks-

I really don't see the need. Key switches are notes placed beyond the range of the instrument usually using lower notes. A take lane is over kill for that.  Plus key switches are meant not just for recording and play back but for live play.

I have VSTis that use lower & higher note ranges for key switches and I sometimes like to separate them (whether on lanes, layers or tracks) because I find it's easier to keep the MIDI content focused on a narrower range of notes with a command like Fit MIDI Content without them. I'm just looking for some use for Take Lanes with MIDI tracks, I guess.

I'm still not clear whether the fact that Draw Pattern works only in the first Take Lane is by design or a bug. It's not a big deal, but I'm curious. I ran across this while playing around with auditioning some Strum Acoustic strum patterns.

I totally agree with you. I would rather not have any non-sounding notes in the PRV so as not to confuse me any further, especially when editing multiple MIDI tracks in the same view such as horns and strings where I need to see chords.

Or if there was a way to designate a note as a keyswitch using a different symbol. That would work for me. And then if we could exclude those symbols from the Fit MIDI content view with a toggle...
