Itunes and Windows Media Player are both capable of burning working audio CDs from 16/44.1 wav files.

Some CD players not liking burned (as opposed to factory pressed) CDs is a long-standing issue. It's to do with how reflective the disc is, the pits in the disc that the laser reads, exactly how the burming hardware did the job and a long list of other factors. I have an inexpensive portable CD player that will only play CDRs if they are branded Sony or TDK ones. The cheap CDs either glitch at some point, stick or the player can't even read the table of contents off the disk.
