• SONAR
  • SOT: Anyone using an expression pedal with an Axiom 61?

I recently bought a "Behringer FCV100 Dual-Mode Foot Pedal for Volume and Modulation Control".
I want to use it to control modulation in GPO and Instant Orchestra but it's not working like the mod wheel... it doesn't fade to no sound or change the layers of instruments (it only seems to control volume not the rest of the data).
I looked in the Axiom manual to see how to set the "expr out" on theto modulation (channel 1) but it appears I'm not smart enough to decipher wtf.
Can someone please give me a step-by-step process?
Thanks very much,
Randy

Ive had horrible luck with getting the perimeters to work properly with an expression pedal and Axiom61.  Spent a bunch of time with Maudio support and nothing worked.  I gave up and draw everything in.  Sorry I know this wasnt helpful

I'd like to think it's just that I have the expression pedal output set to the default of controller 11 and not controller 1.
Did M-Audio tell you how to do that?
Thanks,
Randy

I have never had any problems with it. I opened Enigma 1.2 to check and I have the Foot controller (Expression pedal) set to:
MIDI CC 4
CH 0
data3 127
data2 0
data1 <blank>

which, I believe are system defaults. At any rate, I don't think I ever modified them.
I use Preset 17 usually.

Enigma is appropriately named, but I would give it a try and see if it can coax that pedal into life.

The foot controller I use has a polarity setting and trimpot to adjust the range. It is the M Gear EX P. I've had it for so long I don't recall much about it.

I do use it often and without any problems.

I did get it changed from the ch 11 default to ch 1 but the data being sent on the axiom is 65-127 instead of 0-127 so I'm halfway there.
I'm now looking at the manual to find out how to change that minimum from 65 to zero.
Thanks very much,
Randy

EDIT: I found it and it was set to zero.  So if the minimum is set to 0 it's actually 65 set to 20 it equals 75 set to30 it equals 80 set to 40 it equals 84 (huh?) set to 50 it equals 89 set to 60 it equals 94 set to 70 it equals 99 I sure hope I can figure this out because I foolishly threw away the box and can't return it.

I don't understand what you mean by setting the minimum.

The way it should work is something like this: the Axiom provides a voltage to the trimpot that is controlled by the foot pedal. As you move the pedal, that changes the resistor wiper which changes the output voltage. Somewhere in the Axiom that voltage gets read and converted to a number in the MIDI range from 0 to 127.

For my controller, there is an additional physical trimpot adjustment on the pedal that changes the response and I can adjust it for full range or another range response if I want.

You could check the trimpot against an ohmmeter and see if it goes through the full range of values. You could do that from the RCA jack output pins of the pedal. It is a tip-ring-sleeve arrangement

According to the manual "data 1" is to set which controller you want and I switched that from ch 11 (expression) to ch 1 for modulation. Pushing "data 2" brings up the minimum value of that range (0-127) and I selected 0.
"Data 3" sets the maximum and I set that to 127 but when I use the pedal the minimum it shows (and sounds like) is 65.
The manual also states one can reverse these to where the pedal pushed down will be the minimum and up will be maximum. I did this and was able to get a minimum of zero but a maximum of like 66...so it seems the pedal is only sending half for whatever reason.
I know nothing about how the electronics work except for what you just explained to me so if I don't get a resolution from the support tech at M-Audio (that told me on the phone he would research it and get back with me) I'll probably just buy another and give this one to my wife to volume control the keyboard she uses for live gigs...I did find the box to return it but shipping would cost more than half of what I paid for the POS.
Thanks for your efforts my friend,
Randy

Oh I guess I should have mentioned up front that I'm pretty much a goof when it comes to this stuff...what kind of preset are we talking about?
Thanks very much,
Randy
