I'm so disappointed. I'm heavily invested in Sonar, the quad sound card, x1d (sounds pretty fancy eh..?) producer edition the "How to mix in sonar videos." But Sonar's a piece of crap. I've had so many problems with it their too many to list, the most recent, tonight's in fact, I can't delete a simple midi track. I have 2 audio tracks, and a midi track. Decided I don't like the midi so want to start over. Hit delete, EVERYTHING CRASHES. Reboot, delete...crash Reboot, delete...crash Reboot, delete...crash Reboot, delete...crash...give up

I can't believe this. What am I supposed to do now? How much time will I have to waste dealing with such a ridiculous problem. It's depressing I tell ya. All I want to do is MUSIC! And yet every time I have to turn into a ****ing computer engineer just to figure out what's going on. This was the case when I bought the program several months ago. Gave up on figured it was my sound card, now I'm back with a Roland sound card, still flaking out...

So sad...so so sad....

There's nothing I can do...I can't ****ing believe this. Seriously, what a total piece of crap. I running windows 7, 16 ****ing gig's of ram, Every other program from Vegas to photoshop run like a ****ing dream on this computer, and yet Sonar runs like a broken old rusty vw. I'm so mad right now I don't even know how to express myself....

I guess it couldn't possibly be your computer that's the problem.  I can't tell because you didn't give us any specs. Most of the time crashes are caused by bad soundcard drivers. If its not that, it could be you have a bad memory chip. That can be diagnosed using the memory test in Windows 7 or memtest. I guess its just easier to blame Sonar even though tens or hundreds of thousands of people are using the same software without constant crashes. Occasionally I get a crash. The last one I figured out was due to Mezzmo, another application that was running. These things can be fixed, but you have to invest the time. Sonar is for musicians who want to record and engineer their own music. That means you need to know a lot about computers, hardware, software, acoustics, mixing, mastering, etc. If you just want to play music, then I suggest you go to a studio and pay them to do that for you.

FWIW, a rusty old VW would run pretty darn good. However, if you said a Gremlin or a Pinto, then your saying something.

I had problems with my OC. My OC is OOC right now and I'm using my old E-MU 1616m and have had only a few crashes. With my OC, it was a few a day. It's the new drivers that are the problem but don't tell them that. Great sounding stuff but poor drivers. The version 1.0 were by far better and you can't go back.

Good luck

Dave, I hear you; however, I do know about computers. I'm certainly no expert, but I've been doing this for over a decade now. Not with Sonar mind you.

But it was sonar, I know because when I went back for the 20th time and deleted the synths, Sonar asked to delete the instrument tracks at the same time, and voila...deleted, and I"m back in business. But that's my very point, this shouldn't be happening. It could have taken me days to figure out how to get rid of those tracks. Why should I have to have a convoluted work flow like this?

Yes it's easier to blame Sonar, but I have almost no crashes with my other programs. For example, in 5 years of using reason it hasn't crashed on me once!!!

Which synth(s) were you using in those tracks? Could be specific to that synth... i.e., SONAR no likey...

but reason is very well "kind" on computers sound card specs.. you know that yourself.  I used to be able to easily overload reason, chuck it enough complex thor/combi's and it'll splutter.

sounds like config errors, you set it up correctly asio wise? go into your prefs.. make sure any other card isn't enabled /ticked for a start.. otherwise you can't pick asio mode.

remember these programs use what they are given to work with, so if your memory or say soundcard is flaky (driver wise), don't expect programs to behave themselves.

contact tech support, they will no doubt run you thru setting up or config errors.. knowing about computers is one thing.. knowing about using / setting them up for pro audio .. there is more involved.

Personally, I think music software in general is just this way. Its always been complicated, though some brands are better out of the box than others. There is no shame in asking for help, but you will have to have patience and list specs, etc. until you are completely tired of it. It really is annoying when a DAW does not work, but believe me most of us have been there. Once you get it stable, enjoy the setup and don't change it for a while - your productivity increase will make it all worthwhile. By the way, there is also no shame in trying other programs. I have been pretty darn frustrated with Sonar at times too. In fact, after upgrading each year for ten years, I categorically swear never to use Sonar X1 despite the few features I would really like. 8.5 works great. What I am getting at is do the hard work of finding a program that works ok for you without hassle, and then stick with it - I think pushing through to that stable situation will be worth it. D
