Hi-

Quantize > Audition doesn't produce any sound here if the output is to an external synth.  If I drag the clip to a track that outputs to a softsynth, Audition works fine. The obvious workaround is to apply the quantization and undo it if I'm not happy with the results, but I'm curious if this is intended behavior or if it's just not possible for some reason.

Thanks-

Quantize/Undo is what I've always done. I usually watch how things move in the PRV, and if I don't see anything obviously moving the wrong way, then I give it a listen through. If things are really loose because I recorded without a click and set the timeline after the fact, then I might work through it 8-16 measures at a time so it's easier to keep track.

FYI, I just tried it and it's working ok for my external synth, in SONAR Platinum.

Hi Dave-

Yes, that's fine. I'm still curious why there's no sound when auditioning external synths if anyone knows, but I can certainly live without it.

Hi Tom-

Well, now I'm really curious! I was all set to just resign myself to not hearing it. I hear my ext synth (Motif) while recording and playing back, but not while auditioning quantization. What could be different, I wonder? I'm on SONAR Platinum as well.

Hmm...

Perhaps its the record arm that let the MIDI go out?

Hi John-

I can't hear it whether the track is record-armed or not.

Thanks-

Hey Susan, I think those that hear output must be direct-monitoring their synths.

I verified SONAR is sending MIDI, and the synth is responding, but the audio track that's echoing the input is being temporarily Archived along with all other tracks in the project.

This makes some sense, as you wouldn't want to hear everything else playing during quantize audition, but SONAR doesn't "know" that the audio track is hosting the instrument being driven by the MIDI, where as it does "know" that when using a soft synth.

Since it's using the Archive function, I don't see any way around this other than direct-monitoring.

There's a setting called Command Audition Length in Preferences|Audio|Playback and Recording.
Mine is set to 10 seconds.  What is yours set to?

I noticed when I changed it to 1 second, the audition playback was that brief.

It's a longshot, but I thought I'd mention it.

Hey, Tom, did you see my previous post? Are you direct-monitoring? I think that's the only way you could possibly be hearing the audition given that SONAR is Archiving all tracks other than the auditioned MIDI track. Audition length is not going to affect that.
