My dad bought Home Studio 9 a few years ago and loves it.   He doesn't want to learn a new software unless he has to.  He now has a PC with Windows 7.  Does anyone know if it's compatible?  He does still have the serial number and original CD although the CD says it's compatible with 95/98/NT only.

thanks!

He gave me the disc.  It says Cakewalk Home Studio 9 on it.  Dated 2001.  Says Twelve Tone Systems on it.

Could it be a different manufacturer?

No, it's Cakewalk. There was a Home Studio 9.
All I can suggest is to try it, but the new programs are still very similar to the older programs. I started with Music Creator 2003 back in 2002 and I didn't get lost with the newer programs.
Plus, there are tons of newer, better VST software synthesizers available and the effects are better, too.
Does your father work strictly with MIDI or audio?
If HS 9 doesn't work for him on the Win 7 machine, maybe shell out $40 for Music Creator 5 and see if he likes it. Then go to SONAR HS 7 or X1 if he likes it and needs more stuff.
More stuff is good.

you may try compatiblity mode but chances are very slim. with a program this old your best bet is to call tech support.if there is a way to get in going they will definetly know.thats why asked if it was regestered tech support wont help at all unless its a regestered product.

At the time, that reference was more to indicate that it wouldn't run on Windows 3.1.
XP, Vista, and Windows 7 were the future.
He could try it with W7, but I would expect limited success. Win98 was good in its day, but W7 is far removed from that.
I would join Greg in suggesting MC5 or possibly Sonar X1 Essentials.
X1E is a bit more expensive, but may offer a more familiar environment.
If nothing else, there is a lot to be said for using software designed to work in the current operating system.

thanks for the help everyone.  We'll give tech support a call and take it that route first.  If that doesn't work, sounds like Music Creator would be a great start.

thanks again.

I don't wish to deter you from calling, but I would bet that tech support will not work with you on this product.  Support for it is long closed.  typically cakewalk will support 2 previous versions, IIRC and the current version is X1 Essentials, the 2 previous are SHS7 and SHS6.  cakewalk HS9 is several versions ago.
