(it's only an internet) i do think we're interpreting the handbook differently, alex; the forums are a troubleshooting place, not a debating club

You already have your thread in the forum discussion forums...
Moving on then with the OP's issue.

I'm getting dropped BFD2 notes when playing back in Platinum

I've upped my Midi buffers to 1200 but the issue remains

I'm not invalidating what you're experiencing, but for others who might be reading this thread, here are the main reasons I get dropped MIDI notes.
  • Buffers not high enough (although 1200 should be enough)
  • Several note-ons occurring immediately after note-offs (i.e., one note ends and another begins - there's no space between the notes). I've fixed many dropped notes on drums by a) making sure the notes are long enough because sometimes envelopes need to be coaxed into a "sustain" phase, and (b) changing the duration of all drum notes to 95-97% or so. This gives just enough time for the instrument and/or SONAR to "hear" the note-off prior to the next note-on. If it doesn't register the note-off, it won't register the subsequent note-on. CPU-intensive instruments seem more prone to this but I don't know if the problem is the instrument, SONAR, or an underpowered computer...I just know what fixes it.
  • Overlapping notes that feed the same note or channel, for the previous reason.
  • A polyphony limit in an instrument (sometimes I have to dig in preferences or whatever to find the correct parameter - multiple decaying cymbals are usually what expose this).

@craig

You know, I've always checked the length of my midi notes when I'm in drum composing mode and make sure all the note lengths are the same as well as being fairly short - 30 - 60 ticks works best for me.

For some reason, i didn't bother with my latest project and sure enough, the lengths were all over the place as a result of switching back & forth between different prv windows with "Last Touched" enabled on the Smart Tool.

This helped a lot

@alex

That thread recommended setting the Stream buffer and the RAM buffer to 8192. Mine were set at 16384

I think by a combination of the above 2 factors, the problem has been resolved. I just played the whole thing back twice and not a single note was dropped.

Sorry I haven't been back on...been in the studio all day.  I worked with X3 today, didn't even open Platinum.  No problems at all working in X3.  I did notice that all of the projects that I opened today...that I had saved in Platinum yesterday had all of the PRV vertical zoom levels maxed out.  IOWs...I had to zoom back up to see my synth bass parts in every project.  Not a big deal...but the settings are saved with the projects when saved in X3.

Just minor things that I am sure will get ironed out with updates.

The dropped MIDI notes I was experiencing were in my drum tracks using Superior Drummer.  My drum tracks are not very complicated at all...with no overlapping notes.  Just a simple swing beat.  But didn't see a hint of dropped notes today with X3.

I'm using a Focusrite 18i20 interface...which has worked flawlessly since I've had it.  I checked for driver updates about a month ago and I was up to date at that point.

Thanks for all of the responses and suggestions.  When I get more time to experiment with Platinum I will dive into it again.  In the meantime I will carry on with X3 until I get these projects done.  I'm still excited about all of the features of Platinum I haven't even got to play with yet...!

maybe of topic , but i find not that cool that a lot of midi issues have been confirmed , specially the one that "notes deosn't match the good pianoroll value" and still no quik fix ..how can somebody work a serious project in Platnum ?

Or are there some workaround that i'm not aware of .....

still on X1 until things get resolved ...hope soon ...but really 1 months and half is big specailly with thing that BETA testing must have  pointed out ...

My mouse wheel causes erratic behavior with some apps.  If I click the wheel into tick mode instead of free, the problems go away.

Cool... You might want to check for updates on superior drummer as well. Good luck in your X3 projects...
