while i am very familiar with remote desktop, its not an option to remote control my windows 7 pc as its a home premium version of Windows, and that doesn't allow you to remote to it.

im sure the yMidi software will work on a Surface. try a trial of it..its worth it just for the pad controls!

Haven't got Z3TA 2, but I do have Z3TA+ and I've just mapped the X/Y pad of yMidi to a stereo delay effect, left to right to control time between repeats, up down to control feedback level. and mapped the sliders to freq/resonance & distortion (of both filters) utterly bonkers!!! and fantastic!!!

I just looked at yMIDI, and will have to try it.
BTW, you can use VNC (free) to remote desktop regardless of Windows limitations.

I am all Win 7/8.1 pro versions now but still have a monitorless WinXP Home box I store music files on and I VNC to that. Even works between Linux and Windows.
I think the latest version requires you to register to use the VNC server but it is painless.

yes I've used vnc technology before (my day job is software developer/tech support of hardware/software)
..always found it a bit slow..but then again we were remoting to pc's miles when using it. my win7 music rig is home version as I didnt need to join it to a domain.. the touchscreen is dell insprion 2350 running win 8.1pro as its a works computer and needed to run hyper-v...they don't know i'm now also using it for music now..hmmm wonder if I could setup music software on the virtual pcs and sync them all !!!!

as you've already used rptMidi you should find it  a breeze to get yMidi working..

Never used VNC across the internet...usually use TeamView.  VNC prob is slower than remote desktop.

I have synced only MIDI between PCs as in controlling a synth on one PC from MIDI on another via rtpMIDI. Some people have synth stations running say Kontakt 5 or in the old days Gigastudio. But they have to patch  audio from one PC to the other. If money were not an option I would get Vienna Ensemble which truly combines DAWs across a 1000-base-T LAN.
