  • [Solved] midi notes not sounding during playback

This problem happens when playing back certain midi notes.  It's especially noticeable on drum tracks. It may be happening all the time on any track but It's very noticeable on drums.  I think this started happening after installing the latest update which is E if I'm not mistaken. I'm not saying that has something to do with it. But, this is a recent happening.  It's doing this with Addictive Drums, Kontakt drums, whatever as I tried to narrow it down to a specific Vst problem. That doesn't seem to be the case here.  Also, if it skips kick drum hits, it repeats these misses in the same spot in the next part of the groove clip. Weird....I have to start and stop the track a few times so that it gets the idea that I want to hear the events....then it will start to cooperate. But, it doesn't stay fixed for very long. It comes and goes. I suppose I could install a previous version. But that seems counter intuitive.  Thanks for any suggs.

Try increasing your MIDi buffers. You'll find that setting in Prefs-->MIDI-->Playback & Recording. IIRC the default is 250. Increase that to 500 and that should help.

Ever notice that we get a thread like this about once a month? I'm going to send a note to Noel and ask him to consider changing the default setting going forward.

Craig, that's a great idea.  I don't know what was behind their change to it in the first place, because to the best of my recollection we didn't really start getting midi notes not playing on a regular basis until after they dropped it from the earlier default of 500.

I've never had a problem with it in the past. (Since before the latest update.) If it's working, it doesn't make a lot of sense to figure out why it's working.  But, I suppose some systems can handle the smaller buffer size better than others. Does the smaller buffer size offer that much in compensation?  With that said...I just had to adjust an audio latency setting recently because recorded material was falling too soon. I had to manually decrease a setting and uncheck use ASIO reported latency.  I don't know what settings have been changed with a software revision update.

I suppose I could have performed the recommended....send the audio from a drum track out the system and back in and record it onto another audio track to see if it lined up in time. But, I've been lazy about doing that....It seems -5 is a pretty good value. I performed some bass guitar strikes and my performance was equally soon and late. Considering my best performance will need some tweaks...but as it was before I made this change, my performances were always way way too soon and I'd have to scoot the entire track over quite a bit. Anyway, I'm glad I'm getting it dialed in. Thanks for all of the help. You guys are the best!

That adjustment is actually in Synchronization.  Full Chase Lock -Timing Offset.

That's something different. It's Prefs-->MIDI-->Playback & Recording like fastbikerboy said.

Craig - it's a lot more than that since the new release came out. Something has changed since X3, and a lot of us are seeing this problem. It's no big deal - but I've never seen this issue in all the versions I've used (basically everything since CWPA5 or so) so I had to come here for help
