I have finally found a little time to explore Sonar X3. I started with Addictive Drums. Usually I copy all the midi files for Session Drummer into the Cakewalk Content folder under Midi Library/Drums. I keep the default locations in tact as well. Because I have three add on packs for Session Drummer I have even more midi files for drums. I copy those Digital Sound Factory midi drum files into the same default location as well. This helps with the browser inside of X3. When I use X3 and I use the Browser to locate a midi drum file, the Navigation to find the file is cut down. They are faster to locate which speeds up my workflow.
 
Once I got everything set up the way that I like it I started X3 and began to explore. I pulled in Session drummer midi files and Addictive Drums played them with no problem. The Steven Slate midi files sound Awesome with addictive drums. I tried some of the add on pack midi files from Digital sound Factory and they played with no problems at all. In fact, Addictive drums make these midi patterns sound absolutely awesome.
 
So now I thought I would search for the addictive drum midi files and copy those to the same location that I keep my other midi drum files. So I began to search for the default folder for the midi files to Addictive drums but I could not find them anywhere.
 
The goal here is to use Addictive drum midi files with session drummer. It seems that I cannot find the addictive drums midi files. In addition to this the only way to move a midi file into Session Drummer is to have both apps open in X3 and drag from the Addictive Drums GUI into the Session drummer track in X3.
 
I also discovered that when I try to crop a clip of a midi file from addictive drums into Session drummer, It won't add the addition data to the crop when I make the clip bigger. In fact any midi clip I copy from addictive drums into X3 won't crop properly. When I try to expand the clip the data is not copied in the crop. It will copy and paste just fine, but not crop.
 
Does anyone know where the Addictive Drum Midi files are located? Are they compressed in some file that only Addictive drums can open?
 
An interesting side note is that while Session drummer midi files work with Addictive Drums. Addictive Drum midi files don't play nice with Session Drummer. The drums are moved to different locations.

You can drag the AD midi to the timeline and and then export them.  Iknow for the samples AD uses some proprietary file format to prevent copying .  I suspect the same may be true for midi files despite the fact that they allow you to extract them into whatever DAW you are using.  If you click on the "?" in the upper right corner, you can change the drum mapping for AD.

Thanks dub, I thought there may be some default file that contain the midi files like session drummer has but I guess that is not the case.
 
It seems that they do allow you to copy the files into what ever daw you wish but I cannot crop the file to make it bigger in sonar. The data does not copy into the new cropped area. I can copy and paste once the file is in Sonar as much as I want. This basically means that if I use Addictive Drums midi files it will take longer to customize the Drum track. No big deal but it would be nice if they cropped the right way like session drummer midi files.
 
I thought I might be doing something wrong. Does anyone else have this problem? 

Uh, gee is it really that much of a problem to drag the AD MIDI patters into SONAR and edit them there?  You can then bounce and drag them into the Media Browser (in any folder you want).  Shoot, I don't recall a time that I used a loop as it was without editing something in it.  Are we expecting to much from the digital world?
 
Okay, these complaints are just getting to me.  Man, you guys just don't know how things used to be.  So, just ignore me if I think it's amazing and EASIER with what I can do nowadays.

What you're calling "cropping" is what SONAR calls Groove Clip Looping. Any MIDI file can be converted to a Groove Clip by right-clicking and choosing Groove Clip Looping. Groove Clips have beveled corners to differentiate them from conventional MIDI clips.  Groove clip loops use a regular .MID file extension, but a looping flag and boundary information are added to them so that SONAR "knows" to copy the data as the clip is "rolled out". Session Drummer clips have this information stored in them, but Addictive is just delivering a conventional MIDI clip when you drag a pattern into a track so when you drag the edge you're just slip-editing the boundary.

first of all don't confuse complaining for observation. I was just pointing out what the features of addictive drums are. If you read my response to dub you would see that I said this was really no big deal. Part of the reason for this post was to point out that session drummer loops work well with addictive drums with no editing at all. This actually surprised me.
 
If you read my posts through out this forum you will discover that I am not one that nit picks and complains. I am simply looking for the limitations or suggestions. There is a difference. I do know how things use to be. I have been a Sonar user since pro audio 9 and a sonar user since Sonar 2. I watched its development over the years.
 
We don't all use Sonar the same way. When it comes to drum loops I hardly edit them at all. In fact my work with midi is very little. I copy the drum midi patterns to one location because it speeds up the work flow process. Having session drummer open then starting addictive drums and dragging a pattern over to session drummer are extra steps that take time. Isn't the whole point of the skylight interface a new design that speeds up the work flow?
 
For the record I was not complaining and my post was not negative so lighten up and have a happy meal or something. All is well

Thanks brundlefly. I am familiar with using groove clips with audio. My work with midi has been limited and I was not aware that the midi clips can also be converted to grove clips. Being a guitar player and a lousy keyboard player I have had little need to work with midi outside of session drummer.
 
While I have used the PR view on occasion that is the limit of my work with midi. Your anwser helps a great deal. Thank You.

I finally got around to installing Addictive Drums, and tried to use them on a midi file I had used on Session Drummer. It was a file I originally imported from Band in A Box, and worked fine on Session Drummer.
 
The midi mapping was all messed up. It didn't play correctly in AD. Evidently I had GM drum mapping and AD has its own map.
 
I did a search and found a free converter program called Midi File Mapper. It is very simple, and from what I can tell left no weird viruses. It works just great. You call up the MIDI file and tell the software to go from GM to AD.
 
BTW, Addictive Drums sound much better than the old Session Drummer, at least to my ears. Also, the processing features inside of AD are very nice.

To play GM files with Addictive Drums without converting them: go to the '?' in the top right corner, click on map window then at the top left area of the map window there is a map preset dropdown menu. Select GM, then click OK at the bottom right and you should be good to go.
