  • What's included on new membership? (p.2)

The content that is generated by Cakewalk is only for current members. If you have a membership in 2015, then drop it, then start up again in 2017, you'll have all the 2016 feature updates you missed but will not receive the Cakewalk content that went to members in 2016.

The idea is that the content will be sufficiently cool that it will represent yet another reason to renew at the end of the year.

There is also some talk about making content available for purchase to non-members. Brian Hardgroove's Bass Loop Library will be part of the membership benefits, but the loops are really good and there's no reason why people using other DAWs shouldn't be able to buy them. If that happens, then some back content will be available for sale and you can pick it up that way.

One reason why I'm not giving a lot of advance notice of what I have planned is that it's subject to change without notice. At the last minute I came up with a couple things that are now slated for the February update. I had no idea I was going to do them back in January. The ability to turn on a dime and respond to user sentiment and requests is one of the reasons I'm stoked about the membership concept.

That sounds logical and I do realize that it's not possible to give exact dates beforehand for everything (not really asking for it either). I'm trying to get a better understanding what kind of strategies there will be for the content (same as before or has this been changed with the new membership model?), what are planned release cycles (monthly, quarterly) and how long the membership only content will be available and so on.

Also, I wish that membership only content would be indicated more clearly from the base content so that people looking at the feature list would see clearly what they get on membership and what's meant to be shipped with the given edition for longer periods. For example, are AD2 drums and Melodyne Essential currently something that's planned as membership only content and will be offered for a limited time only?

You are getting ALL extra stuff for free, if you buy Sonar, which is what you are paying for.

My idea is happy changes added to Sonar will be more than sufficient to continue paying money to CW.

All the old dudes want more Sonar, and all the new dudes want more that is not Sonar.

Too bad there is not a quick way to transfer reason and wisdom to the young.

Content is part of the monthly updates. The content is available in any update that is available to a member. So for example if someone becomes a member in October, they start getting content with the October update. If they don't renew, they don't get additional content. If they become a member in the future, they will continue to get the content that's shipped each month but they will not get the content that was shipped when they were not a member. This is different from program features. When you sign up, you get whatever the current software is at that time, which includes previous features.

This is why I specified Cakewalk-generated content. Content vs. features should be obvious from the documentation supplied with the updates.

This doesn't preclude getting content from third parties in the future, but for example AD2 isn't content. New beats for AD would be content. Rapture isn't content, but a new instrument with samples for it would be.

I think the old dudes will enjoy some of the content  But the point is moot, because hopefully there will be something for everybody.
