  • Using Audio Effects through Midi/Instrument/Bus tracks - Help needed

Hi

I want to use some of Sonars Audio effects (reverb/compressor etc) on some of my midi tracks.

So in this instance my soft synth is Kontakt>Friedlander solo violin. I have set up a BUS TRACK (Bus D) then added Reverb to Bus D, then I routed my Kontakt INSTRUMENT TRACK to BUS D. But now I have reverb on all my patches in KONTAKT, I only want to use the reverb on one MIDI TRACK (My solo violin). Is there a way to route an individual midi track to a bus track or just bypass other midi tracks from my BUS TRACK ?

Thanks

Try configuring multiple outputs in Kontakt - each instrument gets it's own audio track. That way, you can place the reverb on just the violin track, rather than have effect all the instruments.

i.e. The audio track hosting the Kontakt output channel that has the violin on it.

In order to be able to process instrument sounds separately, you need to add an audio track and set the input for each output of the synth you're using. If more than one instrument will use an effect, you can put it on a bus, and add Sends to the tracks that need it. But if only the one instrument will use it, just put it directly in the audio track.

Also, when using sends to a bus, set the reverb to 100% wet, and use the Send level on each track to control the amount of reverb added. When putting it directly in the track, use the wet/dry mix control in the reverb.

Thanks for the response Guys!

Only problem is I am creating an audio track but can only set the input on the audio track as the main Kontakt output. Am I doing a school boy error?

Cheers

You have 3 options:

1. Switch to the multi-channel version of Kontakt so that it can route each instrument to a separate output. The easiest way to do that is to save your instruments as a multi, delete Kontakt, install the multi-channel Kontakt and then load your multi.

2. Use separate instances of Kontakt for each instrument. This can be time-consuming if you have a lot of instruments or if you've made extensive customisations to them, in which case you might want to save the .nki's and reload them.

3. Use Kontakt's built-in reverb as a send effect.

Here are a couple of posts I put out there to explain how I set things up in Kontakt 5, where multiple loaded instruments are routed to separate audio output channels, and routed to separate audio and midi channels in Sonar to pick up the appropriate audio and midi being sent by Kontakt 5.

The two above are pretty similar - 2nd one may be better written.
