Can no one definitively answer if you can install BOTH a 32 bit AND a 64 bit version of Sonar (any dual capable version 6, 7, 8, 8.5, X1, X2, X3, current 2015 Pro/Platinum) and have BOTH work?

(again YES install in different directories)
thx

Bluesplayer -

I normally run 32-bit but I had 64-bit installed due to a similar experience as you.

I was going to say "I think they both run fine" but I just tried to run SONAR 64 and I got the following message after opening a project:

"The following VST failed to load:C:\Program files (x86)\cakewalk\shared utilities\internal\Console Emulator\Console Emulator Bus_32.dll"

And this was opening a template, not a full project, that as far as I know doesn't have any Console Emulator active...

So, basically, no, they don't both run happily - at least, not on my system, after my install sequence.

I have both versions installed on my machine and both work fine. you can install both versions and both will work. I don't know why it is not working for you. I used the Command Center for the first install then I went to the files on the computer and installed the 32 bit version from there

Does it crash when you try to start the other version. or will the other version start at all?

When you install the last version do you see a new shortcut or does it replace the shortcut you already have? Did you use the Command Center for your first install or did you download the program to register your computer off line?

Sorry I just seen that the shortcuts point to the logical directories. I am sorry your having difficulties. I am not sure what the issue is.

Yes you can have both 32 & 64 bits install on same computer. I do. I look at, and treat the 32 bit as an older program. So, if I create a new program in 32 bit and then load that into 64 bit everything is fine, until I save in 64 bits. At that point I would not try to load that program back into 32 bits. Much of this is explained in Sonar help and read me files.

Symptoms are not catastrophic or even very helpful to isolating "issue."

The next to the last install starts, e.g., Platinum logo comes up, then just simply quits.

No errors, no lingering half loaded drivers, nothing left in RAM,  it just stops.  and I can run the LAST installed version (32 or 64) right behind this "crash" with no ill effects.

I just went back and tried this with X3 - identical behavior (installed 64 first, then 32 second: 64 bit won't start but 32 will start: then reversed install order of X3 (32 then 64) and which version that runs is reversed.)

OH well (BTW this is WIN 7 64 but it should make no difference)

edit:
This has nothing to do with opening songs saved in "other" version - just opening program has issues

thanks for helping

Just something to ponder. I gather from this "then reversed install order" that you have uninstalled & reinstalled on more than one occasion.

The question is, did you do a FULL uninstall on BOTH versions and delete the necessary registry keys?

There are detailed instructions on how do do this somewhere on the forum.

I've run 32 and 64 bit versions side-by-side, I think around X2 time. Can't really remember the setup details, but it definitely worked fine.

My strong suspicion here is that you've got them both installed, but for whatever reason, your shortcut icons are pointing the same version.

Have you tried looking for them in the start menu? You should see both versions there.

Ah, hang on, ignore that. I see from your last post about it failing to start up that you have a different issue. Hmm, odd.
