Hi,  I am trying to record automation data to a MIDI track and I think I have it set up right, but every time I start recording, the track I am trying to record the data to goes mute and I can't the notes to play again.  They become white in the piano roll view. I've tried using the mute tool but that doesn't seem to work.  No, I do not have the mute button pressed on the track.  I've tried this with recording faders and with recording controller data.  In both cases, as soon as I start recording, the data appears in the track, but the notes go mute.  Am I doing something wrong, missing a setting?  Any help will be appreciated.

Well, it all depends.

How are you recording your automation data?

Please list the steps you have taken.

Hi Bristol_Jonesey,  Thanks for you help.  Here's what I do:  I'm using the Aria soft synth plugin with Instant Orchestra.  I have a track named Easy Strings.  I highlight that track and press Solo.  On the tracks' fader, I right click and check automation write enable (automation read enable is also checked).  Then I click the Arm button, hit R and record my faders.  The fader movements record, but the sound from the track goes off and the notes turn white in piano roll view.

For recording controller one using the mod wheel, I set up CC1 in the piano roll view to receive from the mod wheel and then click the Arm button, hit R and record the mod wheel movements.  Same result, the mod wheel records but the notes don't sound and they turn white in the piano roll view.

By the way, I can manually draw in either fader movements or controller movements in piano roll view and that works as expected.

Right, this should be an easy one.

There's no need to hit R - as long as write is enabled, just play the project and make the movements you want with the faders etc.

By Record-enabling (R) you are recording over your existing midi data.
The notes in the PRV will turn white as they are being overwritten.

Thanks so much Bristol_Jonesey.  It worked perfectly when I didn't hit the R key.  I feel a big DUH coming on.

No problem - we've all been there.
