Are you sure that the take lane wan't auto muted by the record mode being set to Comp mode? Muted clips/notes definitely display the behaviour you describe in your OP, or they do here anyway. They then need to be "promoted" to be heard. Best done with the comping tool, which is automatically invoked using the smart tool within take lanes.
 
If you record in Comp mode any existing material at the same point is automatically muted. That is by design. if you don't want that behaviour either change the record mode to "Overwrite" or "Sound on Sound" depending on what you are trying to achieve. I would suggest sound on sound in your case (assuming I am understanding you correctly of course)

That rings true - I wanted the additional take lane (merely CC events) to be additive but I could only get it to replace the existing one, so I deleted it and re-recorded using Sound on Sound mode and it worked.
 
Thanks for the response. I have read a few articles on the take lane stuff now and it is starting to make sense. I am just getting back into using Sonar after a long gap and things have changed quite a bit behind the scenes.
