Hey everyone.

Has anyone encountered any issues with BFD2 after installing Sonar Platinum?  I had been using X3 Producer and BFD2 was always fine.  I upgraded to Platinum over the weekend (installation was very slick by the way...Command Center is awesome) I opened a project I had been working on that contained BFD2.  The project opened fine - everything was there but I couldn't open the interface for BFD.  I looked in my project's Synth-Rack and it was listed but grayed out.  BFD2 doesn't even appear among any of my VST plugins in Platinum.

I looked for the DLL file for BFD2 in the VST plugins folder for Platinum and it wasn't there.  I then copied and pasted the DLL file from my X3 plugins folder into the plugin folder for Platinum and I thought I was good to go.

I started Platinum again and re-opened the same project from before...BFD2 was now present in the project and active in the Synth-Rack, however when I try to open the interface for BFD in the project - the GUI is blacked out, I can't access anything in it and I get a message that tells me my file is corrupt.

Any thoughts??

You should use a common VST folder for all your Sonar versions. That way when you install a new one you enter the existing VST path in the setting and all your old VSTs are instantly there.

Hey Karyn,

You know, that's a fantastic suggestion and I really don't know why that didn't occur to me before.  It would be quite a simple fix.  So let me ask you.....There seem to be a few plugin folders.  I have a "VST Plugins" folder, a "Steinburg" folder which contains a couple of my plugins, then within the master Cakewalk folder there is a "Shared Plugins" folder and a "Shared Utilities" folder.

Could I simply create one "Sonar Plugins" folder which contained the contents of all of these other folders and then point Sonar version XYZ to it??  Is it truly that simple??

This very curious & interesting.

I've installed Platinum on my 2 systems, both of which have BFD2 installed.

On one system, I chose NOT to import my previous settings - Sonar found BFD2 and runs perfectly.
On the other system, I chose to Import previous settings and guess what - BFD2 appear as normal and works perfectly.

So I don't know what's happening in your case.
Can you run BFD in stand alone mode? That's the first thing to check. From there, you should be able to get it running inside Sonar without issue.

I actually haven't tried that.  I am at work today and won't be able to check that until I get home tonight.
Thanks for the response.  Out of curiosity...Say it works in stand alone.  Then what?  How can I make it work in Platinum?

Colin,  are you using the default VST locations? In which case all your Sonar versions would be looking in the same place ...

Mojo,  I use 2 VST folders as standard.  i:\VST\32  and i:\VST\64  where i:\ is one of the extra HDDs in my system.  It should be obvious why there are two from the names...
The New Sonar adds two more...  i:\VST3\32 and i:\VST3\64.  These are all in the preferences.

I would start by putting the .DLL back where you found it and adding the old VST path into the prefs.

Yes Karyn, I believe I am.

I will check tonight when I get home, probably during the AD2 download.

I've been trying to keep these 2 machines in sync so that they have exactly the same software installed, but it's not easy!

I seem to remember a similar issue when reorganizing files in the past. BFD had installed dlls in more than one location and moving one of them created the same problem as you. I moved it back and all was well, so thinking it might be more of a BFD issue than Sonar. Perhaps BFD needs to find all it's files in locations determined by the installation?

I expect running it standalone will confirm/disprove this. FWIW, I have multiple versions of BFD, could have had something to do with evolving configurations. Your post is prodding me to go back and clean this up. Given our impending weather disaster in BOS area, might have the time to actually get to it in the next day or so.

Best practices of common VST folders as noted by Karyn are highly recommended.

I would add a reset/rescan of all VSTs.  (Couldn't hurt, and if everyone did it would likely clear up a lot of the glitchiness some are seeing in the move to New Sonar).
