  • Sonar 4 VS X3 > PRV > What I used to be able to do but now can't ... ?

Hi there,

I think I ran into a 'possible' lost bit of functionality but wanted to check with you guys and gals, because I might just be missing an option to turn off to fix the problem.

In PRV is Sonar 4, working on more than one instrument in the same PRV window, using the "draw" tool,
I used to be able to select the track I want to edit or add to, grab a note from a track that is NOT selected,
CTRL+Drag (up a bit or to the right a bit so it's visible after the CTRL+Drag) and essentially
copy 1 note from the non-active track to the active track. My selection for active track doesn't change unless
I choose the track in the track list at the right.
I've used this thousands of time in Sonar 4 and it's a great perk.

BUT, in X3 as soon as I touch a note from a non active track, that track becomes active and the track I wanted to be active becomes non-active.

Now, I'm hoping that I'm just missing an option somewhere that says something like:
"Don't change active track based on note selection in the PRV" ... or something like that.

Maybe I'm using the wrong tool. I was using the "smart" tool. Ummm ... is that it?
Anyway, I'd love to hear from you. Probably someone knows what I'm talking about here
and I hope you can help me find a way back to that fast and easy method I'm used to.

Thank you!

Tried it with every tool. Fail! Fail! Fail! Fail! Fail! Fail! Fail!
Every tool in PRV in X3 automatically changes the active track when touching a note.
Do we definitely have some major lost functionality here?

Let me give you a more comprehensive working scenario.
Imagine we have an intricate and fast cello part (imagine the instruments YOU work with, it doesn't matter) consisting of 25 notes, every note a different length and different velocity.
We want to double that cello part with the violas an octave higher, most of the time, but sometimes we want a harmony. Some of the notes will be right on the octave and some of the notes will go 2 steps above or below the octave.

In sonar 4 it's as simple as:

1) Select the destination track in the track list on the right.
2) Stand on the CTRL key and start CRTL+Dragging notes from the cello part, (or any other visible part for that matter, it's dosed matter)
and CTRL+Drag the bejebitz out of it and it's done, and it's done fast and exactly the way I want it.

In X3: Foget'a'bout it. It aint gonna happen because X3 is helping me by assuming I want the note I touch to be the active track.

Now I'm still really hoping that there's an option I'm missing, to turn off the automatic "make the track active by selecting a note" and someone can tell me where it is,
but if not,
I've gotta wonder how well the bakers that baked X3 really know how the past cookies and cakes really tasted and how good they were.

Someone please help me out here before I go looking for the disappointing and much MUCH slower work around?

Thank you!

I don't do this often but I think if you right click and lasso the notes you want to copy you can then place the smart tool on a note where you get a cross. then ctrl drag to where you want it.

Nevermind , I went and actually tried it and I couldn't make it work for me either, I was able to do it using the inline piano roll however

Nice thought teego,
and I learned something about right clicking and lasso with the smart tool, (thanks!) but as soon as I try to copy that note, the active track changes again, and that's the core of the issue of my problem.

There needs to be a button that says something like:
"Don't change active track based on note selection."

Now here's an other slant on on it.
I just had a thought about the locks (disable editing for the track) but that also disables the ability to even select a note from a locked track. Now that's overkill and oversight in my opinion.
Reason I call it overkill is that:
If I could just select a note from a locked track, most likely that locked track wouldn't be set as active by making that selection, and then I could clone that not to the active track, but since the lock also disables selection, it's not possible.

Yeah, there might not be a way to get that functionality back. I've always used copy-paste for this:

- Make the selection in the source track, and Ctrl+C to copy.
- Set Now time to start of selection if it's not already there (F7 was the old shortcut, but it needs to be re-bound in X-series)
- Select target track in PRV track pane and Ctrl+V to paste.

thanks brundelfly. That seems to be a decent place to start for me. I'll keep it in mind and give it a try.

If the notes you are selecting are in their own clip, select the clip, then shift & G moves the Now time to the start of the clip.

Thanks Bristol. But this is much more about individual notes and getting even 1 note cloned from one track to an other in PRV quickly ... and the now obvious lost functionality. See the OP for the "comprehensive working scenario" for the idea.

Having used the multi-track PRV a lot in the last few years, I can say if selecting a note stopped changing the active track, I'd find this extremely disruptive.

That said, I get what you're saying Steve.
