  • Asio buffer for MIDI problem?

Hey All,

Quick question, and maybe this issue is just because I'm fairly new to using midi more for more and more things.

Here's my issue. I do a lot of recording of midi instruments (live drums using a TrapKat midi drum set and Superior Drummer and other instrumentation with an Axiom pro triggering Kontact/Dimension/etc). So I generally leave the buffer really low to keep the latency low when recording.

But when I'm doing editing/production stuff (like Melodyne Editor), a lot of plugins want a greater buffer (1 gb or more).

If I switch my buffer mid session though, it tends to crash my session,  or Sonar simply drops by interface (a presonus audiobox). I could just do all my recording, and then reboot with the higher buffer, but i was wondering if there was an easier way (or if it might just be an issue with my interface and i should think about getting a new one ).

Thanks all.

Changing ASIO buffer size should not generally cause any problems. I have occasionally had SONAR throw the old "Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use" error on trying to start playback after changing buffer size, and had to restart SONAR, but this is rare and unusual.

You might try deliberately stopping the audio engine before going into preferences, and see if that helps.

I have never had a crash when changing the buffer setting on my AudioBox 44 VSL although do occasionally have to toggle the SONAR audio engine.
