  • So, can I just buy Sonar the old fashioned way? (p.2)

I am understanding the whole up front thing and would never consider the monthly payment plan, but what concerns me is: what will the price be in 2016, or a year later. I am sure they will still offer the choice to pay upfront or use monthly installments, but what is the cost going to be and is this what I have to look forward to every year...a $149.00 or more upgrade price.

This has been discussed. The current upgrade price is $199. There is a promotion going on now for $149. Cakewalk staffers have indicated the price for 2016 (and 2017) will also be $199. There could be promotions in the future but budget for $199.

Still trying to find out the definition of 'soon' will be on that offer. It would certainly help people budget their money to accommodate the purchase.

There has been no date certain provided for the end of the promotion. Soft cutoff dates are nothing new with Cakewalk.

So...if they DID (which they won't) come out with a new release in 2016 and it was $300 for an upgrade for Sonar Platinum users, would that be any different than saying the membership fees where going up to $300?  I think not in all reality.  However, it has been stated they won't go to such a higher membership rate in 2016. 2017, who knows??..  But money wize...it isn't any different than a higher priced upgrade , than had been previous.
Count your blessings you're not upgrading in ProTools.

People are really reading too much into this and think their glass is half empty, rather than overflowing full.

I got the upgrade when it came out last week and it feels solid just a few bugs that don't effect my work flow..

I am not asking this with any ill will or in a negative manner it's just a normal logical customer question.
The one thing that I am wondering about is what if I decide not to upgrade every year. (I know I keep what I have) What will the cost look like to upgrade in two or three years down the road? Will I have to buy the last two years of upgrades as well as a new membership year?

I think they've said there will be incentive for people to buy straight at the end of the year - that might mean another promotion similar to this one? Otherwise it seems sensible to wait a few months after your year is up, to at least see when the next significant feature is added. I'm betting on a discounted "extend now" dealie.

I have gotten the impression (and the bakers may have even said as much), that since there are no more "versions" (e.g. X1, X2, etc.) that the renewal price will always be the same.  As Sanderxpander noted above, there could also be incentives to renew when the membership expires.

The biggest difference if you upgrade now is that instead of getting only the features that were added since X3e was released, you get those features and a 12-month membership where you receive features, content, tutorials, etc. for the next year. Anything you acquire during the membership does not expire. You can pay all at once, or spread out the payments over 12 months.

At the end of 12 months the membership itself does expire. If your membership expires, you won't receive new updates, features, etc. unless you renew - in other words, Cakewalk will continue to do yearly paid upgrades, like going from X1 to X2, X2 to X3, etc. However if you don't renew, everything up to that point is remains fully functional and permanently activated. It would be as if you had X2 but didn't upgrade to X3.

This is not like the Adobe or Avid programs. You keep what you buy.

I have only called Cakewalk 2 or 3 times over the years and not for product support issues, but my assumption was that if I had a product operational issue with, let's say, Sonar X1 today, I would be able to get some level of phone support if needed (although, I reckon the issue would more likely be solved by checking on the forum).

My question is, with the new membership model going forward, is there any change in the support model for the version of Sonar you own if your membership ends or if it has lapsed?

We have a hard enough time dealing with the present so I'm not sure anyone could give you a definitive answer about what would happen 3 years into the future :-)

However I think it would be fair to say that current members would get the best upgrade deal with lapsed members getting prorated upgrade rates. That's no different from the old model. You wouldn't be required to back pay for the previous years.
