That is exactly NOT what is happening Greeny. Not sure how many other ways this can be explained. I'm starting to get the feeling you are trolling or just being very obtuse. If not I apologize but go back and read the information Andrew has provided. This is just giving you extra ways to buy other than the old upgrade method.

I am not trolling, I read the stuff, I pay upfront for the upgrade $149, I get the new features now, then 12 months of extra additions, I dont see an option to get just the update now and not have to pay for 12 months of stuff. I assume the 149 covers the 12 months of new stuff also, but I dont want that cos this far I can only see what "some" of the new additions will be.

Since you're complaining about this I assume you think it worked better before membership was introduced.

Please explain to me what's worse with this new approach?

  • Last year you were able to upgrade to Sonar X3 Producer for $149 and did not know right away what updates this purchase would include the coming year.
  • Now with membership you pay $149 to upgrade to Sonar Platinum and will not know right away what updates this purchase will include for the coming year.
The difference is that now you'll know what cakewalk's working on at the moment (https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Up-Next#start) and have better knowledge of what's coming than before.

You say you don't want to pay up because you "can only see what "some" of the new additions will be".... Well that's a h*ll of a lot more than you've been able to see in earlier releases.

So, again; please explain how it was better before?

Based on Greeny's last post I think he figured it out and was implying he'd upgrade. I kind of feel like a jerk for getting snarky with him over a bit of confusion but it's hard to tell sometimes on the intertubes.

How does support work under the subscription model? Let's say I buy a upfront subscription in February, I can get support until next February. But what if I do not renew again but have as potential bug say in March after the subscription runs out.  Is there still support or will Cakewalk require that I renew the supscription before they will talk to me?

Wow like 7 pages of comments within 4 hours of the initial post / announcement!

I am fired up by what's in the release. I even feel personal satisfaction. Some things I'd either asked for or voted for in the Feedback Loop are visible in the intro. Even little things like Audio Snap now having an understandable power on / power off button.

I like the payment modes Cakewalk is going for. I'm on board. Hope it gets released at NAMM!

Ok I have a honest question and I expect a honest answer. The paint tool. Ok, cool stuff, but. Are you guys purposely going out of your way to avoid making an actual, proper DUPLICATE functionality? I want to instantly copy my selected 4 bars into the next 4 bars into the next 4 bars into the next 4 bars etc by pressing ONE KEY. No mouse. Is that really too much to ask for?

Why do you always take eons to implement insanely basic features that every single other daws have?

Easy to see I can only use Sonar on "1" computer from now on end. Then the occasional rebuilding of the said "1" computer will need to hassle of reclaiming whatever token I have 'dongled-Sonar' to the internet.

Just for clarity, I believe there is no dongle (can I get a hallelujah).

If you never let your DAW on the internet, there is a way to validate the software so you can use it (by downloading a file and using sneaker-net to move the file to your DAW).

You can use that same file to authenticate 10 offline computers that you own if you wish, as long as you continue to only use them one at a time (which most of us are forced to do anyway due to only having one good interface). I'm really not sure how Sonar would protect themselves if you have 10 DAWs in your studio that are NEVER online. I'm guessing it would come down to the honor system at that point.

For most of us, this translates to the fact that you can install on your DAW and your Laptop if you want. You can use your laptop in the field as long as no one is concurrently bouncing tracks in your studio on your DAW.

Obviously its up to us to protect ourselves. To state it simply, we have no intention of making it difficult for people to authorize their software, even if they have multiple machines. I wouldn't worry. The design is very unintrusive.

With that being said, if we see the same aunthication request 100 times we're going to know somethings up and, if necessary, provide a free complimentary upgrade to SONAR Demo :)

You should always support developers with the "I trust you" attitude. This is a good way to combat piracy.

This is my favorite quote from the founder of Spectrasonics:

The closest thing to that is iLok. But the problem with a system like that is that it gives the most important control of your product to another company...and you have to go along with their way of doing things, even if that's NOT the way you want to do business. Not only that, but if something happens to that company or that system, then it affects everybody...hundreds of products and hundreds of thousands of users! The concept of paying for a system like that, when we can do a better job of it in-house is extremely distasteful to me.

It's weird....we lose some sales to Pro Tools users because we don't use iLok and they prefer to have a dongle. But if we did, there are many thousands more of our users that would hate going to a dongle system. (and offering both dongle and dongless methods just complicates things, providing less reliability, more tech support and less security as well).

I just would never trust another company with such a valuable and key part of my business and how I interact with my customers.

I have an elicenser and iLok. They do have their advantages but when you boot up another machine and run a DAW without those it can be a hassle.

Once again support developers who believe there are more honest endusers and thieves.

Sorry if this has been asked. It's hard to keep up!

If we pay for the monthly subscription for, say, three or four months and then decide we want to purchase it outright, is what we paid for the subscription deducted from the full purchase price?

Thanks-

Honestly, that's not a path we want to manage. There is no way to make the really automated. We'd be managing a lot of SKUs and scenarios. I understand why you might want to do that and then hope you can go back to paying upfront. I think that's why we want to offer a demo on day 1 so people can have 30 days to try out some of the new features.

I'm confused by this.  Are you saying that if someone was to pay monthly for 6 months they don't have the option to pay off the remaining 6 months in one lump sum if they choose???

I have Sonar X3 and I have purchased the full versions of Addictive Drums 2, TH2, Melodyne, etc, will the installation of Platinum let me bypass the installation of the "lite" versions of software I already own? Also, AD2 comes with 3 AdPaks, can I just select the 3 AdPaks and not install AD2 with Sonar?

Sooo... the upgrade price for Producer is going to go up to $200? Okay now I'm gonna do a bit of grumbling... that's gettin' pretty steep, guys. Hope there will be plenty of sales throughout the year.

They're going to have to make a good sales pitch in a years time too because there won't be any big shiny release to sell - all the next years development should have already been released!

Agreed.  Now they just call it Sonar. C'mon where's the flair?

I read all 5 pages too, dang. I normally update every release which usually means forking out 150-200 every year anyway.
A couple questions.
I still have X2 installed so I could still use the plugins with X3 and I have a lot of purchased plugins in the X3 plugin folder. Will the new version still find everything?
Say sometime in the middle of next year you have a membership sale $149 vs $199, would the new membership extend the current one by 12 months?
Any plans for enhancing the notation editor?

I think that is a good question like will I have to pay for a repair now the warranty expired and you find out it should have been a factory recall.
