I'd be paying $20 a month/$199 total for the latest version and a year's updates either way.

That's not quite right,  this first year we're paying $149 for a new version right now plus 12 months of future updates.

That's true if I get the early offer, sure. Otherwise, it's the prices I mentioned.

This time next year, and each year forward, we already have the latest version. We're paying $199 in advance for a years updates, which may or may not be worth while depending on what is in the updates.

Sure - the point I was making is that I hadn't worked out that the $50 price drops to $20 after the first year, or that you can get the $20 price starting from some arbitrary point in the future if you already have Producer. It's not actually very clear on their site that the price does drop after 12 months, and I think they've missed a trick by not making that more explicit on the versions page.

(However - it's not been made explicit that you can get the $20/month rate if you are resuming a subscription after having previously let it lapse - I can see why they wouldn't want to allow it (because people will probably just do 1 year on, 1 year off) but if someone who does let it lapse ends up back at the $50... that's going to be controversial.)

......I just hope the UK price reflects the actual rate ($150=about £98) and they don't just swap $ for £.  It's software, there's no shipping.

Yes, I'm looking out for that chestnut.....

+ VAT, cake wont pay our taxes unfortunately :(

Looks like the new store is going to give UK buyers a better deal than previously. The "CA-2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier" is showing at $118.80 then £83.86. Maybe not the £78 you would expect but not a kick in the pants away from it.

$149.00 = £92.93

              £ 92.93
+ VAT (@20%): £ 18.59
TOTAL:        £111.52

If this has already been addressed, please point me back to whichever of the 12 pages I missed it on ...

I don't think this bodes well for bug fixes for non-subscribers.  Your industry already has a bad habit of bundling bug fixes with new features in paid updates, rather than providing straight-up bug fixes gratis.

So will Cake be working harder now to keep bug fixes separated from paid updates so that they can be made available to non-subscription buyers?

Also, I agree with the previous poster about paying in advance for promises.  I get that the subscription model is supposed to get people onboard with a monthly payments in perpetuity, but the need for Cake to provide incentive will *potentially* drive an increase in highly publicized BS "features".  I guess time will tell.

Yes, I'm a skeptic.

This leaves me as a potential periodic upgrader with concern about bug fixes being even harder to come by if I don't pay for them via subscription.  And one who watches very closely to see what kind of real value track record develops.

brconflictFor the time-being, however, If I could just export/import those Mix Recalls to other Projects, that would be handy enough. Would save me a few hours each time I start a new mix session with a whole new band/artist. I could mix down one song to taste, and then, rather than use that as a post-taste template (a sweaty process for me), I could simply grab all the Mix-Recall mixes from that session and choose which one to start with in the next song/Project.

This would be a great feature!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm sure CW is tired of me bullying for this ability. I dub them Project Sync Groups (PSG's), and I'm working on an updated video for this feature request. I had one earlier, but it couldn't be shown on here.

For these Mix Recalls to work wouldn't you need to have exactly the same setup (number of channels, busses and same effects) anyway? Isn't it easier to just save your preferred mix as a track template to start up the new project with. Or save it as a project template?

No more gobbler it seems.
In the Control Bar Enhancements-video there's no Gobbler Module available.

okay question. You get the 149 upgrade and have what would have been x4 plus now you get 12 months of future upgrades are they integrated into a single download like in the past were we  would have an x1 an x2 and an x3 on our computer all separate full versions. This then means if we installed a version and it sucked badly and needed tons of bug fixes that at least we had the prior version to use still while bugs got fixed on the new one. Is there going to be a delineating point in the development to say okay now you have had it for a year and a full new version is going to be available versus an upgrade or how is that going to work?

Before there were a through e upgrades and that is cool I just think for purposes of having projects working in a version we need to be somewhat backward compatible and the issue of having the last version as a safety net for when bad code is released is to me a thing I would enjoy so how is that going to be given to guys like me who like having multiple versions so I have that net?

I like the concept of helping people get access to software with a monthly subscription that opens you to having more people try your software since the monthly is so low in terms of perceived cost in the short run. Those who pay for it up front like me get the better deal. I would go the up front route most likely and use it for 12 months and then after 12 months I probably wait a while and buy it up front again. How long I wait makes the deal better since if I wait a year I get that years upgrade and then have 12 months of the next upgrade path paid for. If I jump on the $149 deal I would already have the upgrade that would have been x5 so waiting after 12 months goes by is the choice/ question at that point and If I am doing well financially its no big deal but if I want to wait a full 12 months at that point I can and that would be equivalent to what we now see happening. Or my option is do the monthly thing and end up paying way more for sonar. Lots more options and lots of ways to view the situation.

Those who have allowed themselves to get upset over this new biz model issue are really just confused people who are upset you made them have to think. If they want to wait a few months and see more development before they pay they can since at any time a new upgrade could come out so constant releases are a nice benefit of this model and when they do see enough value in the offering they can plop down their cash and get the next 12 months of upgrades free as the bargain. I think I like how this is going to play out.

I do believe that they do not currently support windows and there seems to be no indication at this time for it to happen.

Oops, I started with Sonar last year and it looks like I chose the wrong DAW. Because for me, any kind of subscription based model is 100% No No.

Its not a subscription - its two different payment options.  You can either:

Pay $149 and own the software outright (and get whatever other content they chose to release over the next 12 months).
Pay $14.95 per month for 12 months and at the end of 12 months own the software outright.

Their choice of the word "Membership" is very telling here - think X2 content club for the 12 months of updates.
