I wonder also.. but I also wonder when the marketing department will start mucking around with prices..
70-80% of companies , pro audio ones do that I deal with..

I think I'll sit back and watch hows this plays out
(my poker playing is improving ;-) )

How long will the "intro offer" be available for X3 Producer to Platinum?

According to an earlier post from CW staff in this thread, through January and possibly February, actual end date of the promotion has not been specified.

As your last purchased version ages, I would expect the cost of purchasing a new version of SONAR would increase, just like the price matrix shows today.

You mean that 2 years later it will cost to me like upgrading from Sonar Studio X3 today?

There are no published prices for 2017. There is a promotional price and the regular renewal price. Historically when users upgraded from older versions, they paid more that users upgrading from the most recent version.

But now there is no "version" as it mentioned above - it just constantly evolving piece of software...

i.e. if 2-4 years later I'll decide to rent Platinum version for a month (for some work) it still will cost $19.99 to me (as X3 Producer owner today)?

If you only need it for a month, download the demo. It's free.

If it's free you're missing out on an easy $10. And one month is never enough time for me to trial something.

Cakewalk doesn't charge for demos, that's just how they roll. Karlssonhaus said he only needed it for a month, so that's what I addressed.

Perhaps Cakewalk could add a rental option in the future where you don't own the software, but that's another layer of complexity for something that, at least by survey and forum indications, doesn't appeal to most users.

True but in your example, you start with X3. I would imagine there will always be tiered pricing based on subscription status but it is pretty hard to say for sure because there is no price structure provided for 2017.

Yeah, rental doesn't seem to appeal, but if you had the option to spread out the payments for 2 years vs. 1 and allow pausing the payments without losing previous payments when you stop them (I'm assuming users can't do this yet), I think you'd appeal to a wider range of opinions, including mine.

Even as an owner of X3 and the upgrade payment to be $14.99/mo, that's $180 for 3 features I know I'd use. The one-time upgrade is the much better deal. I just think the per-month on these options is slightly high, especially for Platinum.

Sir Les
It is not paying for a upgrades, I have no issues with that....it is paying for support for them to stand behind the product they made, with licence to use on a said standard system capable of using it on...and I believe if it is so needed money for supporting their product, then what support is given for this new cost?...are we getting remote technical support , or just phone?...and how good is Gibson support?....You say they have money...but selling of a name brand, and adding in this cake walk, is just a means to make more?....charging consumers to stand behind a product they made....might as well buy the code, and troubleshoot it till it works....and be done!....but, that is just another avenue none seem to ponder to learn how to do.....Not being serious here in total truth...but some things I ponder when buying into the new....has left me most hairless in some places....I got Steinberg VST 3.7r....or something like that back in the hay days of PC, and followed from my Atari days of old midi setup flops and crashes..Doesn't work any more on newer systems, and was a flop for me on any one said it would work on...No refund there.....and I refused to pay for the upgrades and fowl mouth head tech, long distance charges anymore, and bent services asking me to upgrade to the next level of bugs of Steinberg's support groups highest top head dweeb....ever again, So it was still buggy in their new offerings until they went to version 5 and rewrote the Atari code to new c++ or what ever they used for pc stability, instead of patches.....I hope this does not lead others to similar outcomes.

And Avid support could not solve my problems either when buying into their bent ship of pay and pray, before I came to cakewalks side of the fence....and it works...so so...had some issues in the start up , but as I upgraded, it got better, and then it had a major bug, and then x3e solved some...good work...but needs refining.

or MS remote for a year, only to find the solution is to buy win 8.1, because there head support could not solve their issues I paid for.....win 7 and paid more for that....man always paying and praying....perhaps it is the prayer?

So...hope this is not a move towards loosing masses of hair continually.....but try we will, suffer we might, and then....pay another dime and try some more..., or make do with what is already hear, has some issues now...sort of working well enough, but I think I do not trust it as is anymore, in these work arounds I have to do to make it work right on my systems, for real serious work in money making ....and if it is not perfect this time, I will be bald and drunk in a stuper  dupper rage!...not sure I will be able to dail any number then...wink...but let us see and then be sorry....right?.

Well, so I have to upgrade today (and year after), because in 2017 (or 2020) my Producer X3 will cost nothing in terms of upgrade discount. Looks like the same model that we had before "subscription" deal.

I doubt even CW has figured out what X3 will be worth (in upgrade terms) two years from now.   Too much can happen in that period of time.

Historically, Cakewalk have always provided a discount to registered users of their products. I believe it is shown in the current subscription prices.
