So I've been playing a lot of bass lately...

cool beans

So I'm not quite sure where you found this character (I'm guessing he/she's an ultra cosplayer) but I like it.

Not just because I'm a huuuuge fan of the early Alien(s) franchise but also because, especially in the case of this picture, it reminds me of the really wacko wire/sculpty/various fabric/standee/etc sculpture my (tied for) #2 best friend in the world and bandmate made and dropped off for me earlier this summer. She is a very good/oddball artist and she started making this 10" little steampunky statue that as it progressed she realized she was making ME.

I have four arms playing two separate Flying V's, a big ass tentacle tail, demon teeth, bolt on eyes and whacked out blue fun fur hair. It's friggen' brilliant.

She even mounted it on a black and white checkerboard stand (too mimic a crummy stage), bought a little toy "Marshall" style amp thingie (that is triggered by a magnet rubbed against this weird ribbon cable to make distorted guitary type sounds) and an LED light bar thinging to mimic stage lights shining upwards onto this freakish reimagining of old school Beepster.

I think he's gonna be my "company's" mascot.

Beeps, have you seen this? Popped up on YT recently, really interesting doc with most of the actors and all of the main creators.

Fascinating to see how they did stuff pre-CGI.

I have not but that first movie was visually stunning on top of just being a straight up awesome flick. The second installment was also good but that's when they drifted away from the warmer/curiouser imagery/camera work/sets into that dark, 80's style horror/scifi look and then the franchise stuck with that vibe.

After that I still enjoyed the later movies but compared to that first one they are hacko schlock. I mean you can just see how much attention was paid to every detail of every second of every scene in that first one. I think it's right up there artistically with 2001: SO... and frankly a less obnoxiously artsy fartsy storyline.

I heard there was a 2001: SO sequel that attempts to clean up the vagueries of the original. I should see if I can find it online somewhere.

Myself and a friend saw that movie when it came out, matinee viewing. Gobsmacked doesn't come near. Coming out into the daylight after that was pretty surreal. It's hard to explain to people now what a groundbreaking movie it was back then. I mean, 1979...

..and yes, there's 2010. Not great, frankly.

I would have been 2 at the time. I think I saw it a few years later (likely on an old Beta/VHS rental) but yeah... despite all the crazy stuff they can do now I can see how insane that must have looked. Have you ever seen THX 1138?

It's Lucas' first full production (far predating SW). It's a little weird but the visuals are nuts and the storyline very dark. I was raised on Star Wars so I have special nostalgic love for the franchise but it makes you wonder what Lucas could have done if he stayed a little edgier.

Also... CGI has come a loooong way and does look pretty cool now but it still just doesn't have that "real" quality some of those old FX masters used to be able to pull off. I mean even that craft has gotten even more amazing (and I'm sure 3D printing is only going to make it more so) but the industry (and viewing public) have decided the extra effort/artistry isn't worth it when you can just jam it through some computer modeling. I disagree. It requires too much suspension of disbelief IMO because... well... it's obviously an animation.

That's a shame.

I saw it when it came out too. 1979 I was fresh back from Guam and it had been 4 years since I was in the states.  We went out for lunch and decided to take in a movie. XX and myself went at around noon on a Wednesday afternoon at a great theater.  We didn't have a clue what the movie was about and was blown away. We loved it! Best mood and graphics. All I could say as we left was WOW

I've heard a lot about it, and I know Lucas references it a lot, as do other sci-fi movies, but I've never seen it. Will put it on the 'must see' list.

Definitely, man. Like I said it is weird but I think you'd dig it.
