This happened once before and their was a thread about it but I searched for Guitar volume and others like it...nothing.
Guitar volume is fine when I record (in the room or in headphones)
I use a mixer to monitor to avoid any latency. Been doing that forever.
Anyway guitar is "direct" to Audio Interface (Echo Layla 3G) then straight into Sonar. So I don't get whats happening and cannot remember what the reason was before.
I know we shouldn't use meters and peak values but for instance, vocal recordings are always around -10 to -8 when initially recorded. Guitars are -65? I don't get it. Like I said they are super loud when playing back project.
Any ideas or link to the old thread?

IRRC there's no instrument input, so you're dealing with impedance and level mismatches. If that's the case, you'll need a buffer or something else capable of bringing a guitar up to line level.

If there is a (post pre-amp) line out on your guitar amp, you can use that, as the guitar pre-amp should boost your signal up to -10 and match the impedence of the Layla line inputs.

Hmmm...I am using an AX8, fractal stuff. It is made for this. Had this problem once before but I do not remembver what the solution was.
I will check what was suggested...No guitar amp btw, but I have been using fractal gear since 2009 and had this problem once, actually kind of recently. I did search guitar volumes and got nothing here.
 
I'll go thru the ax8 and Sonar. Maybe I changed something by mistake.........

Not familiar with the AX8 output structure, but at least there's no impedance mismatch. Any chance there's a guitar-level output somewhere designed for those feeding guitar amps? Maybe a preference?

There is an "input" pad. Cannot remember where it's set. I'll have to look tomorrow.
what gets me though is the fact that it is SO loud in the room. I know the monitors and the small mixer are boosting it.
Anyway, thanks for the idea.....Need to check the pad setting

In sonar, twiddle the gain knobs then double click to reset to zero.

Let's make sure you get what you got. There used to be an issue in sonar related to the gains where the knob position could differ from the value being used by the program when using templates etc. Maybe fixed, but twiddling and resetting the gains will prove it is not your problem.

Does the wave form look healthy?

When you copy the clip to a new project, does it sound properly loud?

I did find the input pad I mentioned on the ax8 fractal device is set really high, so another mystery as to why.

Thanks to those who chimed in.
Two things were wrong:
 
It was the mis match (Fractal device set to -10 db output and Echo Layla 3G set to +4 db output
and mainly input pad on fractal device set to 18 db, which is for very high output pickups or signal.
Set it back to 0 db pad, essentially NO pad and all is fine
