On a whole I agree they do a great job, but I stand by my comment that they do not represent us, we had no say in their appointment.

if you wanted (or want) to be a host, just ask

the forums were a mess before cakewalk finally allowed user mods

we had no say in their appointment.

Actually, you did.

A call was put out by the Bakers, in a sticky for all to see, for volunteers because they didn't have the time or staff to continue doing it themselves.
Anyone could have applied, some chose to instantly start complaining about it.  But everyone had the opportunity.
The Bakers chose who they chose from those that showed interest.

We're only janitors here anyway.  We don't have the usual "powers" that a forum moderator would have.

As Karyn states there was an invitation placed as a sticky in the main SONAR forum for registered user help with some of the lower level day to day management of these forums.  Again as Karyn states we are only janitors with very few tools available to us for this task much as a building janitor would have.

I'm not saying I did, nor am I denying that overall it was successful and helpful.

I saying it was just down to the Baker's who they picked, but we didn't choose, so you don't represent us.

As far as power, the host have some weight in discussion, and I seen hosts giving out warnings. when in disagreement, using a tone authority.

It's nice to know that someone thinks I have a tone of authority

It's usaully not a democracy in these decisions the owner of the forum does and should have the last say in the choice of Modetators.

In the case of new management it's usually a good idea to start with a clean slate especially if your integrating new products and technologies you may run into conflicting interests by differing agendas and other road blocks related to past differences with the legacy product or personal infighting and conflagrations(in the case of flame wars).

Meng has already stated that the Mod's will be kept so arguing this is kinda pointless. I do agree at some point it should be addressed but now is not the time. Give them a chance to get things going and maybe later it can work out where everyone will be able to use a friendly and useful forum.... as close to what it is at the moment.

That's right - we didn't have any say in the appointment of the forum hosts. Yes, all registered users had the opportunity to volunteer, but Cakewalk, not registered users, decided who would be the hosts. And even though some users objected to one or more of the hosts, Cakewalk made their choices and stuck with them (at least until it became clear that some hosts were a mistake and those hosts removed). So users didn't have a say in the hosts that were chosen.

My 2 cents is similar to others.
  1. Get Gibson to assist you in moving the existing forum to a URL other than *.cakewalk.com (unless your buying that domain name too?).
  2. Figure out how to "lock" it against new posts, but still allows searching.
  3. On the "new forum", simply supply a link to wherever you stash the "old" forum - no more no less.
I don't give a big damn if you port over current users.  I don't mind registering again.  Porting users would most certainly be some sort of custom coded one-time-use utility that someone would have to take the time to construct.  Asking people to register again would also "weed out" alot of the "dead wood" in the registered users list.

Thanks Meng!  You da man!

We need to keep the existing forum archived at 'forum.cakewalk.com' for the simple reason changing that will break thousands of bookmarked topics.  A lot of folks have bookmarks, because the search engine is no joy.
