I love the idea, especially if the search functions are improved.

We need to keep the existing forum archived at 'forum.cakewalk.com' for the simple reason changing that will break thousands of bookmarked topics.  A lot of folks have bookmarks, because the search engine is no joy.

And no telling how many people still haven't found The News yet and will try to come here for an answer at some point in the future. It'd be nice for them to find a "land mark" to point to the new "Real" forums.

Of course this probably goes without saying, but wherever the forum goes, make sure there are forwarders on for a good length of time.

The first time Cakewalk moved the forum to the present format, I didn't even know they had a forum anymore-it took quite some time to find this one and my "joined date" made me look like a noob even though I had been on the previous forum for years.

People that visit the forum regularly probably wouldn't have an issue, but those that can go months or a year between visits need to be able to find the new home, IMO.

Thanks for asking!

My 2 cents is similar to others.
  1. Get Gibson to assist you in moving the existing forum to a URL other than *.cakewalk.com (unless your buying that domain name too?).
  2. Figure out how to "lock" it against new posts, but still allows searching.
  3. On the "new forum", simply supply a link to wherever you stash the "old" forum - no more no less.
I don't give a big damn if you port over current users.  I don't mind registering again.  Porting users would most certainly be some sort of custom coded one-time-use utility that someone would have to take the time to construct.  Asking people to register again would also "weed out" alot of the "dead wood" in the registered users list.

Thanks Meng!  You da man!

I believe a URL is relatively inexpensive, so www.cakewalk.com can probably be kept as a forwarder to cakewalk.BandLab.com and forum.cakewalk.com can still come here (where ever here is once this forum is archived). At least for a while.

I didn't think that Cakewalk had a web forum before this one. Unless you are referring to the old newsgroup. And we all had to sign up as new users no matter how long we had been using the newsgroup.

I must agree with some replies here - most forums are horrible to navigate, ugly to look at and just plain uninspiring. Right now this forum is my landing page because it's not only valuable but also fun to browse - I'd like to see the new one hold the same aesthetic value.

Must have been the newsgroup then. Point being, it moved without a trace for those who didn't frequent it.
