I don't know anything about other forum software options to be able to say which, if any, is better.
From the perspective of a user of this forum it has become increasingly flaky to use, certain functions no longer work, editing a post often makes it disappear altogether, sometimes a post is accepted and then instantly deleted for no apparent reason and once that happens it seems to happen every time until you log out/in again, but all that said it used to be just fine, so it's as if someone fiddled with whatever settings at some point and messed it up.
One thing for sure is that the recently attempted reformat known as "The Bakery" was not well received in these parts and rightly so IMO. Aesthetics aside, the structure, with posts moving up or down the thread depending on reasons I never quite find out made it mostly incoherent. I think you would have a mass desertion on your hands if something like that were implemented. I guess that the idea was that the most pertinent posts stayed near the top of the thread and the not so pertinent ones ( I can be polite when the mood takes me) sink to the murky depths, but it just made the whole thing unreadable to me and many others seemed to concur.
I get that with the current linear set-up it can sometimes be necessary to wade through pages of nonsense and egos before getting to anything that actually resembles a valid point, but that said, it doesn't really take many forum visits to become easily able to filter out what doesn't need reading (that's what avatars are for, right? ;))
I also agree with the suggestion that if there is to be moderation on your new forum, it would be a good time to change the moderators.
