• SONAR
  • Cakewalk by BandLab free but will next update/version cost us (SONAR users/customers)?

Hi Everyone,

Please don't beat me up because the answer to my question is obvious to you, and not to be a troll, but:

Since the new Cakewalk by BandLab is essentially the same at SPLAT (which I have) sans two additional features and extra plugs, etc., will be have to pay for the next update/version since we are/were registered Cakewalk customers (now BandLab users/customers)?  That is, basically we are not really getting anything different from what many of us SPLAT users already have, so this isn't anything new or improved.  Hence the question. Unless, CWbBL will continually be free to everyone (which I am not sure of either, but thought I would throw it out there).

Kind regards,

I'm sure the BandLab public announcements today would have alluded to such a thing if it were in the works.

While the announcement say it is "free" and I guess there is not immediate intention to charge for it, there is one indication that can be changed in the future:

MEMBERSHIP:
04.10.2018

That is quite far from infinity...

Also I have failed to find EULA / License conditions.

Meng already addressed this. It is just a place holder that will be removed in update :)

So you guys are confident that there will not be any charges for upcoming updates and the Cakewalk will be as free as BandLab itself?

Kind regards,

We can't possibly know. Since the program ships without any content and few plug-ins, they may be following the blades and razor model. If that is the case, the program will always be free. Even if that is the current model, it could change at any time.

We don't know yet how Bandlab will price Cakewalk DAW by Bandlab in the future.
Still pretty sweet deal for basically Sonar Platinum for free. We all have to wait and see
how this plays out.

Platform and future product updates will continue to be free, just like BandLab - innovation must push forward!

But don't expect Rapture Pro for example to be free when it is re-released :-) (except for those that have bought it before in some way or form and have already created a BandLab account)
