• SONAR
  • New Cake plugin (p.4)

The strategy with Cakewalk (and everyone else, really) has always been (1) release as standalone product, (2) milk everyone who's willing to pay for it, (3) gradually reduce price trying to get the money of everyone who hasn't paid yet, and finally (4) bundle it with something else to increase the value of another product. This is a simple price discrimination strategy that every vendor does.

I don't think that holds up. The ProChannel modules that have been sold stand-alone still haven't been made part of the main product, a couple of years in.

Even as someone who shelled out for some of them, I think you could argue they should be. But that's not actually how it's been done. Not even something as simple as PC gate / expander has become free to date.

I don't remember ProChannel modules ever being freebies. There might be an introductory discount but we ain't getting this for free no way.

Exactly.

Although the Tape Sim, Sat Knob, Breverb, REmatrix Solo and Console Emulation have been added to new versions of Sonar.

I think this new plugin is more akin to the Softube Mix Bundle, or possibly the Ca2a, which are unlikely ever to be thrown in for free.

I think that if Cakewalk were going to give us this one, they would have included it in the initial release, or have at least shown it of in the "Coming Soon" section.

Still can't wait to see/hear it.

Looks great, for whatever that's worth.

I could do without the scratches though.  I take better care of my stuff.

The styling is lovely, but the scratches are tacky. May have to hunt down the image file if it's included with Sonar 2015

It's a really great plugin! Definitely fits right in with the newer Universal Audio plugins in my sessions (in terms of quality and vibe) and I think it really has a unique sound... both the EQ and Comp. Definitely try it if you're looking for some unique vintage flavor ITB.

It could happen. In fact, it would be a BRILLIANT move by Cakewalk and would instantly establish the value of a membership.

I wonder if it depends on something like, 'hitting sign up targets in the first period'. Fail to hit them, bundle it in to raise confidence, Hit them, sell it.

Will it run in X3 I wonder?

I'm guessing that in the unlikely event it's 'free' as part of the Platinum/Professional model, it will be locked to the current and subsequent versions of SONAR, in exactly the same way as the bundled ReMatrix Solo module is.

If they're going to charge for it, it would seem madness on their part to restrict its availability when there will be users of previous Pro-Channel enabled versions of SONAR who wouldn't be able to buy it. And locking such a paid-for feature to the newest version as an 'encouragement' for SONAR 'X' users to upgrade to Platinum or Professional doesn't really seem to be the way Cakewalk goes about things.

I fear it will be Henry J's favorite amp sims...free with membership.
Anything really interesting or useful...$$.
