This bug has been driving me crazy. I'm using Sonar Professional now, and the bug hasn't gone away. Fortunately Sonar is robust enough that I can find a workaround, but it's inconvenient. I just want to do simple lassoing, and not have to get tripped up half of the time. Is there a setting I can change to get rid of this annoying behavior?

Not a bug, see this video about clip handling in X2 http://youtu.be/gZA0S7eRSWw?t=1m10s the behavior has not changed since then.

As Steve indicated, this is working as designed so you can easily lasso a bunch of whole clips just by touching them without having to painstakingly sweep every one from beginning to end or Ctrl+click each one. If you want a partial selection you should use left-click with the select tool showing, and sweep the selection. Depending on what all you want to include, you can also select tracks and then select a time range in the timeline or select the range on one track/clip, and then add others by Ctrl+clicking or sweeping through their headers, etc.
 
There are lots of ways to skin that cat, but Lasso is not for making partial selections.

Yeah, that's what lasso is for. I remember it took me a minute to get used to when they made it this way in X2, but it's a great system, I think. Left click for precise selection, right click for "grab everything I touch" lasso selection.

Yes, it's a bug, and it's inconsistent. I lasso notes in the PRV, and sometimes I just select the notes I've lassoed, and sometimes I select the whole clip. I can't tell what I'm doing differently based on the two results, other than: if I'm just select I couple notes, behavior is as expected, but if I select a bunch of notes from various tracks, then I'm pushing my luck.
 
To see what I'm talking about, try loading several instrument tracks in the PRV, and lassoing.

Ah, ok. I wouldn't know. I never work with multiple tracks in the PRV, I find it too confusing with the present UI. I don't know what changes I'd ask for, but it seems at least possible that it could be a better designed function.
