Okay, it happens to the "best" of us (not implying anything here :-)
 
I installed Platinum from the CCC, but somehow missed the "migrate settings from a previous SONAR" question, or erroneously cancelled out of it.  I read somewhere that a certain file had to be deleted so that it would re-enable the question, but cannot find it thru' Search (used "migrate", "settings" etc. to no aval).
 
Can anyone guide me to which file has to be deleted ?  Many thanks.

I remember Noel saying that it's really not a good idea to import old settings from a previous version. Can't remember exactly why he said it, but it was after X3 came out.
 
This was news to me as I had always let the old settings get imported. But I did make a mental note when I read what Noel said and decided then that I wouldn't let it happen anymore.
 
Well I just installed Platinum and it didn't ask me about my old settings. So I thought this was a "new" procedure that was implemented in the new install.

Well, if that's the case then I have to manually recreate my Instrument Definitions (nightmare !), Friendly Names for my comprehensive audio i/f and a lot of other stuff.  I hope you're wrong ...
I suppose I could uninstall and reinstall Platinum, but was hoping there was a easier way ...

Just copy the files over manually. They are wherever you put them before. Sonar doesn't know about your previous installations. All you instrument definitions are ina file called master.ins I think.

Thanks Mudgel.  It's not just the Master.ins file; there are others and I would prefer SONAR did it.  There must be a count flag in a file somewhere which sets the "using SONAR ... for the first time, would you like to import your settings .." (or something like that).  I saw this question on the monitor but probably cancelled out of it as my mind was on something else ...
I'll take a look at all the .ini files, maybe I can find it.

I just installed before I posted my answer above. And didn't see anything that asked me about importing my old settings.

Yes, this is interesting ... some get it, other don't.  Wonder why.

For master.ins (instrument definitions) you can import from your old one. Use the Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Instruments command, then click the [Define] button to open the Define Instruments and Names dialog box. Click [import], then navigate to your old master.ins. Select all the instruments you defined (or modified) there and import them. You'll still have to map your midi ports to instruments, but that's quick.

That happened to me on my main daw, which only has X3 installed. However, on my laptop it asked and let me choose from a list of what was installed. I have 8.5 thru X3 installed on the laptop. I haven't tested this but it may ask if you have more than one version already installed or it may be looking for something that existed in earlier versions that is missing in X3. Note that when it did ask on my laptop, X3 was listed in th listbox.

Okay, the latest is that I found the thread which stated that "you can try to delete (better rename) the cakewalk.ini file", then restart SONAR http://forum.cakewalk.com...s-m3153060.aspx.  But this did not work.  I have also read Noel's suggestion to NOT import previous settings, but if I did not this would cost me in the minimum a day's work (I have a very extensive system).  Folder paths is not the issue; I have always had to correct these after a "new" installation anyway.  I'm a long time SONAR user and have two previous versions installed X3e and X2a.
 
I have been looking to UNINSTALL Sonar Platinum in order to make a fresh installation, but cannot do it from the C3, only Windows.  If I do uninstall using Windows I'm not sure it will be a CLEAN uninstall ...
Any help on this (uninstall) would be appreciated.  Thx to all suggestions to date ...
