Hi colleagues,
can anybody tell me if it's possible to automate switching effects on and off and write it on an automation track? I have a track where an effect should not run permanently, but only during certain bars. Apologies if this is a stupid question :)

Most plugins will allow you can automate "bypass" which logically works the same, unless you use rather old plugins with limited automation feature.

Hi. As James mentions, most plugins will allow this.
Which version of SONAR do you use?
All the best.

Hi James and Zargg: Thanks for your replies. I'm using Platinum X64 and the reason why this problem hasn't come up yet with me is actually your answer: most plugs allow this. Here the plugin concerned is Fabfilter Timeless 2, which doesn't seem to have a bypass. Any suggestions?

Perhaps you can 'split' the clip into the sections of Off-ON.

Or use an aux/bus track with effect and automate mute on said track.

The VST3 format of Timeless 2 supports "Host Bypass." This turns off/on the plug-in and may be automated. The "Host Bypass" button is on the left side of the plug-in header.
