Hey guys! Sorry to post so soon after my other "solved" problem! but I am having a nightmare here!

Long story short, I noticed my 64bit version of Sonar hasnt been working for a while but never cared because I just used the 32bit version! However, as of today I installed my brand new Sampletank 3 and found out its only 64bit compatible!

So let me explain what happens when I try to run my 64bit version of Sonar 8.5 Studio

The splash screen temporarily loads up and then all of a sudden disapears and thats it! So I click it again and the same thing! It just wont load!

I tried re-installing it from the CD and still no joy! So then I started thinking there has got to be a file somewhere that doesnt get written over with a new install, and its that file thats currupt maybe? So I logged off of my windows 7 user account and logged into my other windows profile user account so that I would get a brand new desktop and MAYBE a chance to see if the 64 bit version of Sonar would load!

When I clicked it, it started asking me all of the things it asks when its first installed, do I want to import settings etc, and it has to perform some audio tests etc, and then it starts searching through the plugins just like it does on the very first time you install! ............  I started getting messages asking me about authorisation codes for my vst's (obviosly coz it thinks its a different machine or something) so I switched it off and started to think I was right about my theory! So does anybody have any idea what could be causing Sonar to not load? It cant be the installation as I have already tried re-installing!
Has anybody had similar issues? I have windows 64bit professional just in case you needed to know!

The standard uninstall - which you tried - often leaves remnants.  You need to do a clean uninstall (and reinstall):

Something you may want to try prior to a complete uninstall/reinstall is to re-patch the installation you have on your computer and see if that takes. Both the 8.5.2 and 8.5.3 patches need to be run (in that order) and both files can be found here. The main SONAR program has been released with every patch I have seen which may be the issue (I do not own version 8.5, so cannot confirm this).

Thanks guys!!Just a couple questions........How do I do the "Clean" uninstall and re-install?

I have already patched up to version 8.5.3 so do I need to run the 8.5.2 followed by the 8.5.3 patch?

The second post in the thread JonD linked has how to do a complete uninstall. If you have 8.5.3 already installed, you can just try the 8.5.3 patch again (it just needs at least 8.5.2 to run, and you meet that criteria).

Personally I would try to find the Sonar re-installer funciton, and use that first.
then double check no Sonar is anywhere in Program Files and Program Files(x86).

then reinstall all the patches one by one on harddrive at Program Files (not Program Files(x86) as this is only for 32bit software).

If opening Sonar after that for the firstime,  launches an initiation run, it should be ok
good luck anyway

For what it's worth my Sonar X3 64 bit stopped working after an update to Sampletank 3. I thought it was just a coincidence and maybe it is but.........

It took me a few hours of uninstall/reinstall to get it working..........

There's no value in just doing a uninstall without the registry edits as it's usually the registry entries that are the cause of the problem.

Please follow the instructions linked to in the 2nd post.

If you think about it, registry stuff is the only difference between one Windows user and another. Well, that and permissions, but if 32-bit SONAR runs OK for you then you can probably eliminate permissions. You'll know after deleting the registry keys, which will put your two Windows logins on the same footing. After doing that, you will have to go through that initialization sequence, e.g. scanning plugins, testing the interface and being asked about importing preferences just like a new installation.

Try bringing up SONAR in safe mode by holding the SHIFT key down while it's loading. This will prevent any plugins that are in your default project template from loading. You could have some 32-bit plugin in your template that's causing problems for 64-bit SONAR.

It's not like SONAR to just abort without any messages. Go to \users\{user_name}\appdata\roaming\cakewalk\sonar 8.5 studio\minidumps and check if there are .dmp files there that correspond to the dates and times when SONAR aborted. If so, one of these can be submitted to CW support and they'll be able to tell you what happened.

The only time I've ever seen SONAR just quit without an explanation it's been because another instance of SONAR was already running. If you had tried to run it previously and it hung during startup (or shutdown), it's possible there's an orphaned instance of the executable still running. You won't see it except in the Task Manager list of running processes, which is where you'll need to kill it. Check there, or reboot to make sure there are no orphans.

Hi Chaps!! Once again BIG thanks for all your replies! I have fiddled and fiddled and bitflipper thanks so much for the info about submitting the report! I never knew that! Will definitely be using that in future!!

As far as the problem goes, I havent uninstalled yet as I found that REinstalling the 8.5.3 update has made the 64bit version work ok! Wohooo SUCCESS!! Well, kind of.......I have that once I do the 64bit update, the 32bit version stops working with exactly the same symptoms as the previous problem with the 64! arghhhhhh

So how do I get the 32bit version working? Well I go ahead and REinstall the 32bit version patch and BINGO! now it works! However, the 64bit version then stops working! LOL

It appears I cant have BOTH programs working at one time (I dont mean running them together BTW) I mean having the ability to switch from one to the other!

The reason I would like this is because I have many mixes saved with old 32bit version that have plugins that wont work in the 64! So it would have been fantastic to keep the 32bit for times in the future when I wanna go back into an old mix for some reason, but from this point on only use the 64bit due to samppletank 3 ONLY being compatible for a 64bit DAW

Am I right in thinking you cannot have both the 64bit and 32bit working together? Or is this just a problem with my system?

Thanks guys!
