  • Should I uninstall PX3 first before installing New Sonar (SSD space issue)

Hey there

I just bought the presale version of New Sonar (I am always early adopter- hope they will not come up with some coupon discount next week- lol). I have PX3 installed and very limited space on C drive. I have like 40 Gb left. So this means- I need to uninstall PX3. Do I go with "Add/Remove Programs or is there a better way to uninstall? My C drive is SSD, and SSDs do not like to give back space even after something is deleted or uninstalled. On that topic- I have no idea how it filled all 220 Gb- all I have on it is Cakewalk Sonar X3, NI Komplete without libraries and some IK Multimedia. The sum of folders sizes does not match actual space occupied shown. Looks like it fragmented but it says- it is not. So, yeah- best was to make space for New Sonar and get rid of everything old Sonar, please? Thank you.

PS: I also have SP2 installation files, so SP@ must be installed as well.

i never uninstall any sonar installations.
When i get a new computer, i start fresh again.
unistalling has UNintended consequences.
don't do it.

Absolutely correct.

What kind of consequences? New Sonar is almost the same as old PX3 Sonar version, but Installer is different. You mean- install it on the top of existing PX3? Then it going to attempt to install all the samples and content... And then it going to install data in to existing Cakewalk folders next to X3 files...

I could get new hard drive- I was going to start all over this summer or fall when they release Windows 10. My computer is 2013. Hard drive is replacable, but all the software synths installed may get confused. Na- new hard drive is not solution. This is why Cakewalk should offer upgrade installer for those that have previous version.

You don't have to install all the samples. Don't even download them if you already have them. There will be some info telling you which parts of the downloads contain what. Just get download the main program and whatever else you want. Then do a custom install to only install what you want to use.

It wont be a large draw on your hard disk. I like to keep the old version so the new will transfer the settings from the old. Very handy.

Do not even think of defragmenting an SSD. Fragmentation doesn't affect data transfer to/from them much if at all because access times are so fast. Defragmenting one will simply mean you've carried out a huge number of unecessary write operations and (possibly drastically) shortened the life of the SSD.

By default Windows won't even let you defragment an SSD (unless Windows has incorrectly detected it and thinks it is a HDD). The task scheduler controlled routine defrags Windows runs by default exclude SSDs.

Thank you for replies. I am not trying to defrug it, I just try to install New Sonar and have some space left for Windows updates. I have Protools box sitting on my desk and I do not install it because I have no space.

My C drive shows with 185 Gb out of 223 full, so I have under 39 Gb left. When I calculate content of each folder, including Windows, Program Files, Program data folders, I only have 73 Gb. Where is all other space? I am afraid New Sonar installation will take all 39 Gb as space disappears uncontrollably.

I was advised to install https://windirstat.info/ to get graphical presentation of disk space but this thing looks like malware. What you think?

Now I am realizing- I also have SPX2 installation. So should I uninstall it?

Sonar PX2 1.01 Gb and 110 Mb in program folder
Sonar XP3 1.03 Gb and 125 Mb in program folder.
Dimentia Pro 5.10 Gb
Rapture 944 Mb
Zeta 32 Mb
VST folder 6.49 Gb

Still with all other folders together it should not be taking 185 Gb of space.

Should I uninstall X2 at least? It looks like it has its own folders but Cakewalk Projects is only one folder, so it may get uninstalled with X2 and mass up X3 install...

I have the same issue with Komplete 10. I bought it upgrade to Komplete 9 4 months ago and I did not install it yet because I don't know how to do it with old install on board...

Dimentia Pro 5.10 Gb

It come with age

My system is not too different from yours. Maybe you could look at rearranging the way you have the content installed.  I have a 240 GB SSD for my main system drive and have X2, X3 and Komplete installed, its just under half full after periodic clean outs of temp files and downloads. All the programs are installed here, but all the content goes on one of the hard drives.

SSD - OS and program files
HD1 - Sonar projects and Audio
HD2 - Komplete, FXPansion, Toontrack, Cakewalk  etc.
HD3 (Cached HD) - Third party Kontakt libraries.

I may add a second SSD for my most commonly used large Kontakt libraries at some stage, but the cached drive does load them quite quickly as long as they have been used recently.

Backups go to an external HD.
