I have been working on a 20 minute track that ideally would be used as a background for meditation or even just to chill out to. Since the track is 20 minutes long, I have come across some weirdness that may or may not be related to the song's length or to the fact that my laptop is a bit behind today's ideal specs.
 
For some reason, at some point in the track, there is an ugly and very sudden noise that sounds like cloth tearing or ripping. This is literally the last thing you want to subject someone to on a track like this. Or maybe it sounds like somebody attempted to multi task on a computer that was also bouncing down audio at that time? But I wasn't doing anything except sitting on my hands waiting for the WAV to render.
 
I'd like to know if anyone has come across this before, and also hear some speculation on what it might be that caused this. I can also hear some static and garbage in the background when I listen on headphones. That all needs to be sorted out as well.

Ok, several questions:
 

• Which soft synths were used?
• Have any of them been bounced to audio?
• Are there any tempo changes at the time when the glitch occurs?
• How many tracks in total?
• System specs please - RAM, CPU, HDD size & type, OS version
• Version of SONAR
• What plugins in project - are you mixing 32 & 64 bit plugs?

Yeah ... you're right ... a few more details might be in order.
 
This was all done using Arturia V5 collection ... but mainly I just used the Jupiter 8 plugin. There is only about three tracks of keyboards. They have all been bounced to audio at this point and there is no glitch in the track comp of these soft synths at the point where we hear the audio flaw.
 
There is also two tracks of actual audio mixed in there as well.
 
So we have three or four tracks of Jupiter 8 all bounced to audio as a comp and then two tracks of audio ... one for bass and one for guitar. No tempo changes anywhere
 
The whole track sounds great from within Sonar there are no audio glitches anywhere and there is also no background hiss. What I did here was to bounce everything down to a master track and listen back. It all sounded great. So then I went to export the whole thing as a WAV file. I've done this a hundred times before with other tracks (using Powr3 dithering and going from 24 bit 88.2 down to 16 bit - 44.1) and it has always worked flawlessly. This is why I suspect the pure length of the song as a possible cause. I have never mixed a track this long before.
 
My equipment: Sonar X3 Producer, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Soundcard, Dell Dimension 5000 series laptop with i5 2.35 gHz chip. 8 gb of ram.
 
 

I had this once when rendering a vocal track using Nectar 2, and always in the same place. The underlying audio track was clean, but as soon as I rendered it (or froze the track) a weird crackling would appear at the same point in the song. 
 
I never got to the bottom of what caused it.
 
My workaround in the end was to split the vocal track around the point where the noise was introduced and put it on a separate track, with a separate instance of Nectar 2.

Did you....... do an export of your project & re-import it back into Sonar?
Or did you do a bounce to track?
Do you have any processing on your master bus? If so, did you bypass it when listening back to the imported master?
 
Did you do a fast bounce or real time?

No. I bounced down a comp of three synth tracks. When you listen to this comp, it all sounds great. There is no audio glitch at the 11:35 point.
 
That noise! Lordy ... it's like someone is ripping a hole in the space time continuum ...
 
I also did not export and re-import. I did process my tracks with Console emulation, compression and EQ from the pro channel. There is also some NI Replica Delay and some cab impulse responses on the guitar tracks via NadIR. These were added in the per track FX bins.
 
My process is, you mix down a comped master of the song to a new track within the same project. Then I solo that track and do final processing including adding concrete limiter to boost overall signal to noise ratio.
 
My issue seems to come in when I export out the final, comped and mastered WAV file out of Sonar. It all just seems to sound great from within Sonar.
 
I'm going to have to do some more experimenting tonight to get a little more info. But, it may well be a good time to upgrade my overall system to something a little more up to spec.
