  • New FX Bin vs ProChannel

I'm pleased with the new features to be sure.

I'm just mulling the ProChannel versus the stackable FX bin.

Since at least X2 I had pretty much stopped using the FX Bin, since I could insert one or more FX bins into the ProChannel of a track or bus as FX chain module(s). That way I could use the most optimal bits as needed from either a ProChannel module or from non ProChannel effect(s), and mix around the flow of that signal as needed per track or bus.

Now with the stackable FX bin feature which looks kind of handy for the console I wonder if I'll start using the FX bin again more often. But if I did, the one bin won't be sandwiched between ProChannel modules in a mix and match mode which works so well.

Since I want effects sandwiched between ProChannel modules, I'm kind of suspecting I'll stay with using FX chain modules in the ProChannel after all, and not use this new stackable FX bin feature at all.

I will definitely use multiple sends feature - that's a for sure!

Wondering what other ProChannel aficionados think in this regard.

ProChannel is nice, but stackable FX will make working with complex mixes much easier. I do see your point about the ProChannel not having the same visibility as the stackable FX and sends, but I'm hopeful the Cakewalk will address that in the future. For now, I limit my use of the ProChannel anyway since I already have other plugins that I like better. Of course, it does also depend on the track...

Wow Dan I listened to a couple of your tracks. Great stuff:-) I take it you use "real" Guitar and Bass.  You program drums? they are so good it's hard to tell. AD2?   Keep up the good work, very pro sounding

I like and have become accustomed to having one effects flow per track - which all happens in the ProChannel presently for my songs.

I had essentially retired the FX bin after the functionality to move and reorder ProChannel modules was introduced, and also the FX chain module for the ProChannel was introduced as well.

Dan your point is well put, and it keeps me pondering now whether I'll start moving to use the stackable effects bin instead of the ProChannel, or keep with what's working great already - which is everything in one flow in the ProChannel.

It's puzzling but interesting to think about. I wonder what Craig would advise.

I thnk this is going to be much bigger and deeper release than many of us suspect due to much misunderstanding being spread through many threads.

I can see that my first task will be reviewing my existing workflow. Especially how will all these new features work for me. I see a lot of things that will streamline and or speed up my workflow.
Apart from a fairly comprehensive new feature list there's a big list of bugs that have been squashed and various half baked ideas have now been enhanced and fully baked.

Can't wait but as I didn't get picked in the early update lottery I'll have to.

I think Cakewalk should stop artificially restricting ProChannel modules to ProChannel. They're just normal VST plugins (with the exception of the EQ, i think), and there's no reason, beyond Cakewalk forcing it to be so, that they couldn't be used in the FX bin.

Thanks! Sometimes it is real and sometimes it is a synth (usually something like a Kontakt library or Omnisphere). I tend to mix real and synth a lot to get the feel of live instruments when I can.

Drums are all programmed, by hand. I never use midi grooves or loops because, for me, it takes the fun out of it.  I use a mix of AD2, SSD4, Platinum Drums, and BFD3.

The easiest way I can suggest to learn is to take a favorite song, import it into Sonar, then load up a drum VST and play along. Keep layering drums until you have recreated as much as you can hear. Finally, play back the finished tracks and mute the original periodically to see what you got right and what is missing. I highly recommend a decent midi keyboard that has a decent velocity sensitivity scale. That's where the magic is.

Mike, is there a list of said bugs anywhere ?  I've just looked around and can't find anything.
