How old is the Delta 66? Like 10 years+?

Older.  I bought it in 2001.  And after dumping the tracks out of Sonar, I have continued to use the 13+ yo Delta66 with Reaper to move forward with my project  :)  I love the smell of 7.2ms RT latency in the morning!

One thing to try that helped me is to disable the high defiintion audio controller in your control panel device manager. Thanks to Anderton for this great tip.

I spotted that yesterday.  Or was it the day before?  Anyway, I've already disabled it.  That is/was a great tip

I have a FW-1884 (circa 2003), so I'm not bagging on the "vintage" gear. But at some point, I know a new interface is coming.

Yes, I miss PCI interfaces. Always shave a few ms out of what you could get with USB or FireWire. Not sure you should give up on SONAR so easily, though...once you get it dialed in and are aware of some quirks, it's pretty solid. Kind of like an English sports car, if you know what I mean

:)  Yeah, I'm always looking and trying stuff out.  I wish Windows would aggregate USBs.  Everything related to guitar has a USB interface these days.

Yes, I do know what you mean, but that isn't limited to the English varieties.

I'm not giving up yet, Craig.  But I would appreciate some follow up on Fault Reporter.  Once the 32 bit plugin theory was debunked, the Bakers disappeared.

I'm glad somebody didn't say, "Delete aud.ini and reprofile your sound card."

The 8.1 thing and lack of dedicated drivers could be the issue. SONAR ties in pretty deep with Windows (maybe too deep sometimes). There were a lot of changes between W7 and W8.1, which frankly, is one reason why I haven't upgraded to 8.1...things are working now with a system that's optimized for Windows 7. I want touch, but not badly enough to upset a productive system.

As to what fault reporter says, I'd recommend contacting Cakewalk tech support. I'd bet that very few users here are running SONAR on Windows 8.1 using a Delta 66 interface with Windows 7 drivers. In fact you might be the only one, in which case you won't get an answer from someone here who solved the problem. OTOH tech support might have run into this before and have some recommendation, like re-installing the drivers using some particular Windows compatibility mode. Or perhaps a mystical phrase you need to enter into a DOS command line interface.

RME and Lynx still support PCI but I don't know if I would want to lay cash on them without knowing how long that support will remain.

Thanks Craig.  My past experience with Sonar was that it was always way more sensitive to hardware than any of the others I tried along the way.  This is likely the case now.

I moved straight from XP to 8.  I did a buncha' research and decided to skip 7.  Everything I intended to use at that time continues to run flawlessly.  Trying Sonar again was an afterthought that came 12-18 months later.

I think I'll configure Sonar to use a different interface for tasks that aren't sensitive to latency and see how it goes.  I'm really curious about how comping will work then.  If/when my trusty Deltas give up (I have a spare :) ) I'll check what Cake recommends for audio hardware.

If you have the bucks, RME is about as good as it gets for latency. I believe Noel Borthwick uses the PCI version so I guess that's some kind of Cakewalk recommendation

For USB, I'm currently testing the TASCAM US-4x4 for suitability with amp sims for live performance with guitar. I'm getting a reported 4.3 ms RTL at 96 kHz, which is holding up even with multiple sim instances (e.g., one for each string).
