I thought the old one was better than step sequencer, or maybe it was like step sequencer plus.

What's so great about the new pattern tool?

Did you see the video? Nice integration with the Smart Tool. Looks pretty cool to me, as do the enhancements to the PRV.

If so, maybe you can answer the question.

What's different from the old pattern tool? Smart tool access instead of key command?

Yes
From what I recall about the old pattern tool. The new tool in comparison:
1) smart tool versus key/menu
2) ability to copy any midi clip to "paint roller" tool, then "roll" pattern to place, back roll to erase.
3) ability to shift apply to pitch shift patter. ((For old tool would have to lasso and drag either in time or pitch)
There are a number of other midi/PRV changes which are cool, including stretching of non groove midi clips like audio which make the pattern tool just one of some nice changes including to the PRV itself.
My opinion.

It's way cooler and intuitive than the old one. You can click on any pattern in the browser and then roll it out or select a snippet of midi on a track and roll it out. It's a completely new feature.

Wasn't there a "pattern brush" tool 4 or 5 years back ? Version 8.5 ? You could mouse brush in midi preset macros into the Piano Roll View. Don't remember why I never found it very useful, but when I finally went to use it one day (X series) . . . I couldn't find it, is it gone ? Hopefully this new "pattern tool" will be a better workflow, and stay around a bit longer.
