I think we'll need to update the offline auth page to include a mechanic now.

Even with the month to month membership option a full time internet connection is not required. Its only required when the term comes to an end, in order to check whether the next month's payment was successful. So if you want to do a session with your internet turned off, or even travel on the road with no internet access, there is no problem.

If I do the upgrade from X3 to the new version and pay the $199 one time yearly upgrade fee will I still need to reauthorize once a month ?

No monthly authorization takes place if you have bought a yearly membership, since you now own the software permanently. In fact no further authorization is required unless you want to install on a different computer. You could potentially unplug your PC permanently and it would work. However if you do want to avail of the monthly updates and features you will either need to connect to the net or have access to a different PC to download the updates.
 
This is a big difference with the way our system works compared to some other companies. Its completely non intrusive.

 So this is a change from the past, as right now once we have our numbers, we can use them over and over forever. I'm not really complaining as I agree you need to address piracy and it would seem this is a fair trade off.
But it's a pain for people like me who are constantly upgrading and changing my DAW around. I have completely abandoned Melodyne because I keep forgetting to un register it when I redo my OS drive or something. It's not worth the hassle to me. So that company looses a customer because of registration policy. I actually love my Steinberg USB stick activation. New computer, no problem, just plug and play. I don't understand why so many hate USB or iLOk activation, it's a good system for both the company and the user. Of course the best for users is the good old serial number system but that's the most vulnerable to piracy. 

There isn't any unreasonable limit on the authorizations. You can still install on multiple machines as long as you follow the licence agreement of one user owning and using the software.
