Take a look at the free Voxengo Recorder which records stereo audio from a channel or bus to a WAV file.

This is the second thread TODAY to ask about this issue. I think it's time for Cake to add this ability to Sonar.

This other thread is here:

I think John is right when he says that softsynths have evolved and this ability is now needed in Sonar.

Think it's time for a FEATURE REQUEST!!

Hi. New project. Insert "VST..." soft synth track. Input of this track in "Midi Omni" of the particular soft synth VST, the output of this track in master. The Echo of this track activated. Insert audio track to the project. The input of this audio track selected as "Stereo" of the particular soft synth VST, or mono if it is a mono synth, and the output of this track in also master. Try to sync the soft synth to the host, Sonar in this case. Now, activate all the record facilities and also activate the "waveform preview" button in the audio track. Press "R" key in the keyboard or activate the record. Play the soft synth, if is not sync to the host . I am not recording wav through this tecnique, even when I see the waveform. If I copy the waveform, I am not allowed to export? With the excelent free software Xwof, the Wheel of fortune 6. I am using Sonar X3 Producer. Windows 7 64 bits. Regards.

Sonar is designed so that the softsynth output is re-created every time the MIDI track is played. Most of the time that is exactly what you want, but some synths have random parameters so that their output is not the same when they are played on consecutive runs. So the main advantage of this direct recording ability appears to be that you can capture the non-repetitive output of a synth. Reportedly this lack of a direct routing was to prevent inadvertent creation of feedback loops.

The workaround is to use a "virtual audio cable," i. e. an application that can receive the audio output from Sonar's input echo and send it back into the input of an audio track in Sonar. Google virtual audio cable and you will find several such applications.

You can loop the synth output back and record it on an audio track. Then
nudge it for any lag.

Sonar still is not able to do this without a good bit of mucking about but do you realise you replied to a 7 year old post.

What is the problem with using freeze or bounce to track?

This will record any randomness as well.

Are you doing manual adjustments to the VST while the song progresses? That's the only issue I can see that you can't do this way. You would need to record/write the adjustments as automation, then freeze/bounce...

What am I missing as an issue here?

If you really need to record the output of a vst to the input of another track, I believe you could use a loopback driver. I seem to remember such from long ago. It basically does what a cable from output to input would do...

Even I did not realize it's a seven year old thread!!
