I would probably use the set beat/time option for the downbeats of several measures, maybe a couple at the beginning of the song, and a few later on.  Then playing it back, notice what the tempo is set to.  That might give you an idea what the actual tempo was at.
 
Or better yet, just ask him what the BPM was when we recorded it?
